On Saturday, September 3, 2016, the Phoenix Police Department will be kicking off the second annual Superhero September benefitting Childhelp, a non-profit advocating for abused and neglected children. The event will take place at the Childhelp Children's Center of Arizona dedicated to Linda Pope (CCCAZ) on 2120 North Central Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
"The superhero culture is one of overcoming adversity and rising up to be a champion for others," said Phoenix Police Detective Sean Reavie. "We want to give back to children who have suffered from abuse and help them find healing and overcome the adversity in their own lives. While doing so, we also hope to spread awareness and educate the public on this unfortunate epidemic – with the ultimate goal to prevent child abuse."
All donations and funds raised will benefit the kids who are brought to the CCCAZ. Since 1998, the center has served abused and neglected children in Arizona by providing treatment, intervention, and investigative services. In 2014 alone, Childhelp provided assistance to more than 9,000 children.
Guests are invited to the Superhero September kickoff to take photos with, and get autographs from, 27 of their favorite superheroes including Captain America, Black Widow, Batman, and Harley Quinn. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero T-shirts and bring their children in costumes. Food and refreshments will be provided, along with activities for children, and Jesse James Comics will be handing out free comic books – while supplies last.
To further get involved and contribute to this cause, the public may drop off donations at the children's center. New items needed include: superhero-themed school supplies, T-shirts, games, and action figures. Supporters may also make cash donations to Childhelp or contribute to the Superhero September Go Fund Me account that will be used to purchase toys and supplies for the children at the center.
