Suspects in a double shooting in Charlotte, NC, led authorities on a chase through Catawba County, NC, that ended when officers, fearing for their safety, shot a suspect several times, officials said.

The initial shooting in Charlotte, which left two people injured, happened at 9 a.m. Wednesday on East W.T. Harris Boulevard at Campbell Burn Court, reports WSOC.

A witness said just before police arrived, he saw a red truck barreling down East W.T. Harris Boulevard. He said several people with guns jumped out, and the truck eventually crashed and caught fire.

Around the same time, a man headed to work said he saw people standing in the middle of the street shooting at cars and one of them shot him in the finger with a shotgun; his colleague driving the vehicle suffered minor injuries. The suspects were apparently attempting a carjacking and eventually found a different truck to drive.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers then chased the suspects involved in the shooting about 40 miles to Highway 16 and Buffalo Shoals Road in Catawba County until the suspects' white truck hit a pole.

When CMPD officers tried to arrest the suspects, the passenger took out a shotgun and refused to drop it, officials said. The officers felt threatened, so officers shot the passenger several times, according to CMPD.

The injured suspect was taken to Catawba Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. Officers took a second suspect into custody.
