The Orem (UT) Department of Public Safety has purchased rifle-rated armor plates and helmets for its patrol officers.

"We never know when things can go south and when they can go bad," Lt. Craig Martinez told KSL TV.

The department now has 85 active shooter kits with front and back rifle protection and 85 new helmets.

"It's heavy but when they're needed, our officers are definitely going to want to wear them," Martinez said.

All the new equipment cost the city a little more than $59,000.
