President Obama to Attend Memorial for Slain Dallas Officers Tuesday

July 11, 2016  |

President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak Tuesday at an interfaith memorial service for the five Dallas officers slain in Thursday’s sniper attack.

The memorial will be a private event where much of the space at Dallas’ Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center will be reserved for law enforcement officers from North Texas and beyond, city officials told the Dallas Morning News.

Details about the afternoon ceremony have been scant, given the city's tense state and the security measures that come with the appearance of President Obama, former President George W. Bush, and other high-profile dignitaries.

Officials hope to reserve as much space as possible for Dallas police and Dallas Area Rapid Transit police -- agencies that saw officers die in the line of duty last week.

Seating at the Meyerson is limited to about 2,000 people; there isn't room for the general public, officials said.

But the public has been encouraged to attend a candlelight vigil Monday at 8 p.m. at Dallas City Hall plaza. DART will provide free shuttle service to the event from the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center starting at 6 p.m.
