The life of an Akron police officer may have been spared after a robbery suspect's gun misfired in Akron Tuesday morning.

According to police, 20-year-old Javon Spells, of Barberton, was on his bike just before noon when he tried to rob a man at gunpoint.

Officers were able to locate Spells near apartments a short time later.

As one of the officers approached Spells, he allegedly pulled out a .22 caliber pistol and tried to shoot, but the gun misfired, NewsNet5 reports.

After the attempted shooting, Spells escaped into a wooded area, where he was later captured by a K-9 handler and his dog, police say.

Spells is charged with felonious assault, aggravated robbery, assaulting a police dog, carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability.

Another cops life saved by bad ammo and bad weapons maintenance, thank God!. Im not at all a "gun ban" person, yet there is some truth about the fact that if ammo is not readily available to people who don't qualify to purchase guns in the first place (Chicago & other places you need a "card") these perps can't get ammo and use stuff that is ancient and way past its use. Good result in this case. I have heard this happening myself many many times over the years. Perhaps this reminds we LEOs that weapon and ammo maintenance is crucial to our own safety.
