Michigan Officer Saves Life of Newborn Who Wasn't Breathing

A Saginaw, MI, police sergeant responding to a 911 call over the weekend is credited with saving the life of a newborn baby.

A Saginaw, MI, police sergeant responding to a 911 call over the weekend is credited with saving the life of a newborn baby.

Sgt. Kelly Schmidt was dispatched at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4, to a home on Brown Street where a recently delivered baby was not breathing, according to a press release from the city police department.

Schmidt arrived at the home and was directed to a bathroom. She saw a 19-year-old mother sitting on the toilet, holding a lifeless newborn with the umbilical cord still attached.

The officer placed the baby on the floor and started administering CPR, continuing until paramedics arrived, MLive reports.

The mother and daughter were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The mother was treated and released and the newborn is still recovering in the hospital's intensive care unit, according to police.
