God speed, deputy. Based upon the young man's photo, I know nothing about his agencies policy, I assume he was wearing his Stetson in the parade. Cowboy hats and campaign hats are cool, but mounted cops need to wear helmets. Motors, bike cops, off-road details, even Segway assignments wear helmets. I rode for 16 years and after two years of soft hats we switched to helmets. They don't look as cool, but urban mounted units spend their time on asphalt and concrete and it doesn't give when you fall. A piece of safety equipment that may have prevented a senseless death.

I agree APDretired, for photos we can wear "cool stuff" when we ark we should wear helmets while on horse back/bikes and motors. May not look cool, but saves us, we would have had a good chance of saving this Brother if he had been wearing a helmet (I assume).
