VIDEO: ESPN Columnist Slams Practice of Having Police Sing National Anthem at Sporting Events

Everybody loves it when police officers sing the national anthem before sporting events - or so we thought.

ESPN Magazine's Howard Bryant wrote in a new column that cops singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" is "staged patriotism," arguing that it signals an "authoritarian shift at the ballpark," Fox News reports.

"Why don’t more athletes speak out on behalf of their communities?" Bryant wrote. "Perhaps more of them would if there wasn’t a chilling force looming over them."

Aren't this race baiting domestic abusers 15 minutes up yet?

Tom Ret @ 5/30/2016 11:42 AM

Bryant is an idiot. Apparently, it is not pc for Bryant to acknowledge law enforcement because he looks at cops as suppressors and not guardians. I wonder if he has the same attitude toward the military?

Tom Ret @ 5/30/2016 11:45 AM

change suppressors to oppressors above

kevcopAz @ 5/30/2016 11:52 AM

Agreed, he is an idiot with the right to his opinion. Now WE all have the right to contact ESPN, protest this "broadcaster" and demand his suspension and or firing. Further if this does not work we have 2 other options which will bring pressure to ESPN. We LEOs can refuse to protect them during off-duty jobs, refuse to work off duty guarding ANYONE affiliated with ESPN until the apologizes or is terminated. Second we can all boycott ESPN and make sure that ESPN realizes that cops are sports fans as are their families and friends. If we all boycott them, broadcast, TV etc and we put pressure on NFL NBA etc etc to lean on ESPN, Lets fight "them"(anti-cop folks) not the way the do, riot, attack people, damage property, but in a fair and capitalistic way, stop supporting ESPN with our money and our involvement with them until we are satisfied.

It is not against Free Speech for a Police Officer to sing the National Anthem at a sporting event. Where does Howard Bryant get off sayin what he did? based upon what grounds or proof. He is an overpaid talking head.

Kevcop AZ has it exactly right on how to fight, put on the pressure, boycott NBA, NFL, etc. and ESPN over this and yes Howard Bryant Should be fired for what he said. Sadly Howard Bryant has insulted those brave men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day 24/7/365, God Bless all LEO's stay safe

Howard Bryant can go shit in his hat

Federali @ 5/30/2016 3:58 PM

I'm not a sports fan, don't care which bunch of millionaire criminals (mostly, I know some athletes that truly are good role models) can play a game better than another bunch of millionaire criminals. Never watch ESPN, so I don't know who Howard Bryant is. That said, he still sounds like an ass. Probably an arrogant a-hole who thinks most people are below him too. kevcopAZ is right though. He has the freedom to be an arrogant a-hole, just like all you sports fans have the right to contact ESPN and let them know what you think of him.

M Chiles @ 5/30/2016 5:18 PM

Bryant is numb nuts who shouldn't even be allowed to speak to the public. Let him get his whiney little butt in a jam and I bet it will be the local officers or deputies who he calls. And being the professional that they are, they will come and lay it on the line for a puke like that. This guy should be fired. It is no worse than sports commentators of the past who have made racial remarks to the public. God Bless all LEOs, may the Good Lord watch over and protect us all.

Can we expect anything less from the "media" that is controlled by the Devil in the W.H.?

DougW @ 5/31/2016 5:23 AM

Dear Howard Bryant,
Learn to sing and maybe someone will ask you to perform the National Anthem.
Haters gonna hate.

Len403 @ 5/31/2016 7:35 AM

This guy doesn't deserve the attention he's getting. I couldn't understand why someone would write such nonsense but after reading about him I totally understand. He's full of hate and very racist. According to one website he was arrested in 2011 for domestic violence and resisting arrest. At the time he said racism played a role in his arrest.

Cancel ESPN.....

DeputyJJG @ 6/1/2016 1:52 PM

It doesn't matter what we do. Some asshat is going to criticize us. The world is truly upside down. 36 Yr. LEO

John retired IA PD @ 6/2/2016 8:25 PM

Not a sports fan don't watch ESPN, and don't know who Howard Bryant is, but he sounds like a total looser. Perhaps the officers could stay home and Bryant could be responsible for crowd control at these sporting events.

Ric Walters @ 6/3/2016 8:15 AM

I wrote ESPN and let them know that their network won't be watched in my house. The more of us who do that, the sooner they fire that arrogant jerk.

Kenneth Hart @ 6/3/2016 8:19 AM

Bryant is a racist and hate monger. I love how people like that lash out at the people responsible for their safety and protection, or in his case hatred for getting arrested for a domestic situation.

Don Davis @ 6/3/2016 11:05 AM

Some people won't be satisfied until the United States becomes a third world nation. Obviously, Bryant is doing his part to make it so.

robin @ 6/7/2016 9:54 AM

I don't know who this guy is, but I'm assuming he's black? Either way, I agree with all the posts. He is an asshole!
