Civil Rights Group Says Park Rangers' Uniforms Are 'Threatening' to Latinos

May 02, 2016  |

A coalition of lawmakers and civil rights groups has a message for the National Park Service: your uniforms and vehicles are "very threatening" to Latinos, reports the Independent Journal.

Maite Arce of the Hispanic Access Foundation delivered the "really tough" message during a press conference on Thursday:

"It's such a shame that something as simple as the uniform and its similarity to the border patrol's uniform — in the coloring — could be very threatening to certain segments of the Latino population. So a discussion about that is going to be really tough."

The coalition made multiple recommendations to the Park Service, including:

Assess the cultural implications of existing agency uniforms, offices, signage, and other facilities. For example, the Park Service law-enforcement vehicles look like those used by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and uniforms have law enforcement connotations, both of which present a significant impediment to engaging all Americans.

Review names of sites throughout system for cultural bias. Some may require comprehensive name changes to reflect a broader and more inclusive history.

The coalition is asking President Obama to issue an executive order directing the Department of Interior and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to "adopt guiding priorities for a more inclusive approach to National Parks."

Oh dear G-d, please make the stupid people in this world go away.

Sheriffs Explorer Sgt. @ 5/2/2016 2:09 PM

This is stupid. Uniforms and vehicles are threatening to Latinos??? The comparison to BP is ludicrous because the BP is no threat to Latinos who are in the U.S. legally. So, what the "civil rights" idiots are saying is that illegal immigrants (who ought to be afraid of being deported) should not have to be afraid of LE and should get to stay and illegally benefit. The whole problem swings back around to illegal immigration."The Park Service uniforms have connotations to LE". What's wrong with that. They are LE. The only people who'll mistake the Park Service for BP are those illegals who can't speak or read English. I'm afraid "obama" might make this executive order because his policies on illegal immigration are all stupid. And change the names of some National Parks because the names are biased??? Which ones? Do they want to change the Grand Canyon to something like "Native American Canyon". Now I'm not biased toward Indians, I have Cherokee ancestry as well.

Appropriate response should be, you are entitled to your opinion but they
won't be changed or just plain tough shit if you don't like it.

Deputy Ken @ 5/2/2016 6:11 PM

This is insanity, how do these clowns even take themselves seriously with such an idiotic statement and premise. Unbelievable, Political Correctness is destroying our country.

OK then @ 5/2/2016 7:27 PM

Many, many years ago leather jackets were "intimidating" and now we have wonderful windbreakers that are useless in the cold.

Retired NY Boss @ 5/2/2016 7:53 PM

Oh please

To OK then - I remember the leather jackets. Way cool, I just missed them in NY

Crispianranger @ 5/2/2016 8:15 PM

The US NPS is celebrating its Centenary this year. And wearing a uniform that has lasted the 100 yrs of the special place in history that NPS rangers hold. Pride in uniform, pride in organization, pride in country! There is NOTHING WRONG with being the best dressed rangers in the world!!!

Terry @ 5/2/2016 9:07 PM

If the Latino community is fearful of the uniform, the question should be asked "Why are they (Latinos) afraid of the color green and tan?" If they are here in the United States legally, then they have nothing to be afraid of. They should be more afraid of the Mexican mafia, bloods, crips, Latin Kings, MS13..... Instead of Law Enforcement.

Officer E. Morales @ 5/2/2016 11:02 PM

Ok, as a Latino officer I am tired of all these orginazation trying to get every one else to cater to there idiotic ideas! As stated in other post, if they are LEGAL then there they have nothing to fear. As for renaming things, tuff $?/;, if a name bothers them then go back to where ever u came from, period!

FrustratedFred @ 5/3/2016 10:06 AM

Things must be really good these days since this activist group needs to dig real deep to find issue with something. I will sleep better knowing they are here to protect me.

Officer Burres @ 5/3/2016 11:00 AM

This is about the dumbest thing I've seen in a long time. Maybe we should all wear pink tank tops and Bermuda shorts. Hide your gun because it might be offensive! This country is going to hell in a hand basket and we're getting too politically correct. Everyone has touchy feelings and it's time to suck it up, buttercup!

Hoshi @ 5/3/2016 11:37 AM

Is the Hispanic Access Foundation willing to pay for new uniforms?

ResAgentSWA @ 5/4/2016 1:00 AM

By Latinos you mean the ILLEGAL Latinos that should not be in this country in the first place. If a similarity to the Border Patrol's uniforms are the complaint, I have a solution. Issue Park Rangers military Battle Dress Uniforms (BDU). There is a National Stock Number for these items already. They are bought in huge bulk so the price is right. They are sturdy and will stand up to the elements. And, they don't look anything like BP uniforms and they don't have that Smokey Bear hat either. (Of course the whiny liberals will then bitch about how we have "militarized" Park Rangers but it will be fun to screw with the libs anyway.)

Fed Cop 1 @ 5/4/2016 7:29 AM

I suggest then that Park Service change their uniforms to white tennis shoes, WB Tee-Shirts, beige baggy shorts worn below their butts, boxer under shorts, shaved head, ball cap worn backwards, and blue or red handkerchief hanging out their back pocket. That shouldn't intimidate the Latino community.

ssc1911 @ 5/4/2016 11:44 AM

Are these lawmakers and civil rights group for real? Saying the NPS lE uniforms are very threatening to Latinos. Guess what they are living in a Latin American Country. I' m sure LE uniforms in Latin American countries may be intimidating or threatening as well especially specialized units. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the current NPS LE uniform . I hope that the NPS LE doesn't cave in to these crazies.

Really? @ 5/4/2016 12:26 PM

The obvious solution is to wear a uniform threatening to everyone, not just one group. The poor babies don't want to be the only ones escared. I'm getting tired of how we have to feel sorry all the time for the poor Latinos. We used to be an accomplished group and now all we do is whine.
