NYPD Officers Unhappy and Feel Less Safe, Union Survey Shows

March 17, 2016  |

The vast majority of NYPD officers who answered a new survey hate their jobs and believe they were a lot safer before Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton took office, according to a new survey by the city’s police union.

The polling of more than 6,000 of the NYPD’s roughly 24,000 rank-and-file revealed a resounding lack of passion for the job, with officers on average rating morale at just 2.49 on a scale of 1 to 10, the New York Post reports.

“The results of this survey prove what we’ve been hearing time and time again from members over the past two years — the job is more difficult than ever, the dangers are greater, and morale is extremely low,” said Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

Roughly 87 percent of officers said the Big Apple has become “less safe” since the new administration took over at the beginning of 2014, with 55 percent of those respondents describing New York City as “a lot less safe.”

Ninety-six percent of officers also said that relations between cops and the communities they patrol have gotten worse during the same period — even as Bratton has made repairing those relationships a cornerstone of his policing strategy.

Meanwhile, 89 percent of officers polled said they would quit the NYPD if they were offered a higher-paying job in law enforcement, while 86 percent said they would not recommend the job to family members.

Patrick Lynch is on the hot seat...he took the city to arbitration and lost (1% raise)....and refuses to negotiate with the city.
So, now he has to deflect blame....a survey.

Oh BOO HOO, if you don't like your job that much QUIT!! It's a proven fact that people who hate their jobs don't do them very well, that explains a lot. Both your job and your morale are what you make of them and entirely up to you to change.
If the city is less safe that falls a good deal on your shoulders as well, remember the strike or whatever Mr. Lynch chose to call it? I would really like to know what you kids think is expected of you. Every year you get more weapons, more legal cover(5 years ago nobody had ever heard the expression "he reached for his waistband" or "feared for my life") more surveillance capabilities, and what were once considered rights are now temporary privileges which you seem to love to strip from people on a daily basis.
You have a union rep that is an idiot, and who absolutely refuses to consider a win win situation.

Did I mention if you don't like your job that much QUIT!!

To suggest all the problems of NYPD are because of 2 men is utterly idiotic.

Percy, really? This story about morale not withstanding ( I don't work there so I wont judge) but you think every year these cops get more protection, more legal cover? You are way off, they are getting less and less every year. In years passed OIS happened all the time when people reached for objects (furtive movements) and nobody blinked an eye. Not saying all of those OIS were legit, but cops are under the microscope now! I do agree that if you do not like your job, leave it fins another if at all possible. But morale can be and is on both the worker and the mgt. You can love your job and mgt. can be so bad (in any jobs they make it impossible to enjoy the work.

Percy, you are such a cop hater. I would like to point out that you never comment on any articles where the police did something good, like recently when a Florida Officer sacrificed his own life to save a citizen etc. Really, these stories are out there and as a matter of fact, on this site. I recommend you go to your local agency and do a ride along, I will guarantee that at the first sign of trouble or confrontation, you will be curled up in the corner sucking your thumb and wanting your Mommy. You really don't have a clue.

Police Union Sues Chicago to Prevent Investigation of Officers Involved in Killing Teen

I wonder how many civilians are given the same protections?
Every cop involved here has lied through their teeth to protect another cop from being charged, prosecuted, and hopefully punished for murder.
This would have been swept quietly away if it were not for some aggresive reporters demanding the video, somehow the audio was missing.
Under a microscope? No, being watched, yes
The worst bit of law ever "Graham v. Connor" says in short light em up and not to worry.

As for you
1 I'm not a cop hater
2 I used to comment on all stories on this page, but after running into people like you Istopped all together.
3 As for your personal insults it's nothing new. People like you can never comment intelligently or can you bring into question my research or facts. So insults about about my politics, sexuality, courage and if I live in my mother's basement abound. Grow a pair and grow up.

Sheriffs Explorer Sgt. @ 3/29/2016 9:55 AM

Percy, you're the only one on here who has the mental ability of a child so grow up. Morale is low in the NYPD because of Mayor De Blasio. He is another anti cop guy. Patrick Lynch is a great guy. And he represents all the Officers of the NYPD. Brattons strategies for improving community relations are failing and the ccrb ( which I mentioned earlier) is doing their best to charge Officers for perceived wrongs. Nonsense. New York City needs new leadership. Until better that happens things don't get any better.
