VIDEO: Requests for Tampa Officers to Work Beyonce Concert Unfilled

Beyonce has taken a lot of heat for her new song "Formation," which critics claim has an anti-cop message. Some Tampa, FL, police officers might agree, if the request to work her upcoming Tampa concert is any indication. No one has agreed to do it, reports WTVT.

Typically, officers who are off-duty agree to work concerts and sporting events at the venue for extra income, but none have signed up to work security for Beyonce's upcoming concert on April 29 at Raymond James Stadium.

The concert is expected to be a sold-out show, so not staffing the event with uniformed officers would be a security risk.

Tampa Police Department spokesperson Steve Hegarty was unable to tell FOX 13 News if the lack of names on the list revealed officers' feelings about Beyonce or the recent controversy surrounding her music and the Super Bowl halftime show where she and a group of dancers wore outfits themed after the Black Panthers.

"We're going to staff it because we have a responsibility to do that regardless of how controversial it might be, who the artist might be, or the politician might be," Hegarty explained. "This is a couple of months away, so we've still got plenty of time to fill those slots."

Police officials said this would not be the first time officers were not interested in working for an event featuring a controversial politician or celebrity, but each time the department is able to ensure enough officers cover the venue prior to the event.

They will if they are told to. But the lack of volunteers is telling. I think it's ok that LE pushes back a bit. No one will care, but it's stil ok. The day may come where cops and LE in general are so fed up they will just wait around until the chaos is over and oversee the cleanup.

Tom Ret @ 2/18/2016 7:46 PM

If the entire force is united and refuses to work security for Beyoncé, there is little chance they will fire everyone otherwise they will have chaos. There is a total lack of respect that is prevalent in certain segments of society today towards law enforcement that didn't exist previously. The cops better start standing up for themselves as no one else will. It is long past time for those like Beyoncé to see real repercussions for their disrespect for law enforcement and utter lawlessness. If there isn't significant pushback, cops better get use to it.

Tom Ret @ 2/18/2016 8:05 PM

What Hegarty says reference to it being their responsibility to provide security no matter what, I believe is utter nonsense. If cops are not willing to take a stand then I state again, better get use to it. Beyoncé can hire her own security which would be rent a cops and not commissioned officers. Officers only have to do what they are willing to do if they remain united.

Tom Ret @ 2/18/2016 8:35 PM

If unanimity of purpose can't be achieved, then maybe the cops should agree to work the event but in lieu of extra pay, say $1000 per hour with a $5 k minimum per officer paid in advance.

John retired IA PD @ 2/18/2016 8:42 PM

If no one signs up, wouldn't the department just put everyone on extended shifts to cover the concert? I have seen this happen before. The Super Bowl should be a time that everyone gets entertained without any political statements. Seems to me that there is a growing lack of respect, not only for law enforcement, but for other people as well. Officers need to stand up for their rights. Yes, LEO's do have rights. Many of these people making headlines berating the police, do so to advance their own agenda, but want the police to bend over backwards for them when they want something. I know that Tampa officers will make sure their city is safe, because that's what we do, no matter what. Stay safe blues.

S.S. @ 2/19/2016 5:44 AM

No way should any officer work this detail. I would definately take a suspension than to work for this b*tch and the rest of her entourage. Hell!, get black LIES matter to work this gathering of fools, and see how long they last.

PoPo @ 2/19/2016 8:14 AM

Tom Ret. in some jurisdictions the city may have an agreement with the venue to provide law enforcement/security, that agreement has to be fulfilled. If they are ordered to do so, I hope for the officers sake they comply, albeit reluctantly. Being stubborn or defiant because they don't like the message isn't what we signed up for, we do our job with professionalism regardless. And yes they can fire everyone who refuses to work if ordered to do so. And yes there is a chance they will lose that great off-duty gig, for cheaper replacements and when someone they really like plays at that venue they won't get free tickets or front row viewing.

TBOW426 @ 2/19/2016 8:18 AM

I wish could wave a magic wand and have every cop in America including the Secret Service call in sick for 5 days. Let the public see how things would be without us. Let them kill, steal, assault, sell dope at will, run over each other, drive drunk.

MikeAT @ 2/19/2016 8:24 AM

Ever since the Super Bowl "entertainment", I've said no cop should work for her concert company off duty. If the department orders you, so be it, do your job. But if you have the misfortune of meeting her, take a cue from NYPD and turn you back.

heather @ 2/19/2016 8:28 AM

I think they have a right to decide if they want to sign up to help on their time off! They protect every day and now someone needs and wants them that has put them down in her songs, videos and the super bowl ( forget about it) she has joined the ignorant people. I will say i have had a few bad eggs in the police force who have what i like to call the God Complex but that doesn't mean they all do and that doesn't mean they aren't people to with families,, hell most Dr have the same Complex just saying. but Who day after day go on calls to help u as a U.S. Citizen even the ones who sit here on social media bashing them and telling people to hate them,, thats horrible!! and bulling,,what has happened to our world what are we doing for our kids? the only thing i see or hear are people complaining and hateing, that is what you are teaching is hate, and ignorance when U should be teaching love hope, respect & Manners and don't break the law its really simple!

Charlie @ 2/19/2016 8:41 AM

Not only should officers boycott a voluntary extra duty assignment for Beyoncé but there should be a nationwide boycott by all officers of Pepsi Cola and their products for sponsoring the Super Bowl halftime that promoted her. Let's not forget to follow the money here, Pepsi bears some responsibility too. I get that at some point these officers will be ordered to staff the concert for safety, but I do hope they take it to that level as a matter of principle. I also hope every concert of hers gets the same response from law enforcement. I don't think that anyone could argue that it isn't hazardous duty at best. The misinformation, fiction, and outright lies her music and video provide is no more than propaganda that costs officers their lives and do an absolute disservice to young people who are taught to hate when it isn't warranted.

TX Lawman @ 2/19/2016 9:59 AM

I'm with you Tampa PD. The Black Panthers targeted my family after I arrested one of them back in 1992. It's time to show these so called performers we are sick of their anti-police, pro killer stance.

Tom Ret @ 2/19/2016 10:20 AM

Beyonce does not respect cops but is willing to use them. She views them as chumps (sp?) who work for chump change and her irk would be the first to call for any officer to be fired and charged if they are placed in a position where force has to be used, irrespective if it is justified. Then she would go further in demanding the officer(s) be jailed and if not, encourage people to riot if blacks are involved, claiming racism. At the same time she is making millions, she is more than willing to use officers for her security and benefit. Officers do sign on to serve the public but there is an expectation that the sacrifices are worth it because it is appreciated by the public and they have the public's backing. Some view the oath of service as putting up with any and all abuse thrown at them, I don't. If you want to replace your entire force with rookies, good luck with that. It takes about a year of training and experience to get much past writing tickets.

Mark Taylor @ 2/19/2016 2:13 PM

Charge triple

Randy Hoagland @ 2/19/2016 5:35 PM

Unity! Bout time to make a stand!!

Percy @ 2/19/2016 6:08 PM

More of the Higher Standards we keep hearing about.
Hearing About!!

Owl Knight @ 2/19/2016 6:29 PM

Glad to see cops taking a stand time to put these people in thier place

?? @ 2/19/2016 7:00 PM

These cops are a joke, Beyoncé is against police brutatlity

Linda Parker @ 2/19/2016 8:06 PM

Tow426 , I totally agree with you . It seems our cops have their hands tied so it would deserve the people right not to have protection for a few days . This would be when our family's could use our firearms to protect our family and property .

Percy @ 2/19/2016 9:16 PM

@TBOW426 says " Let the public see how things would be without us. Let them kill, steal, assault, sell dope at will, run over each other, drive drunk."

I think what you mean to say is everything would be the same except no innocents would be gunned down, tased, beaten, or other wise abused by law enforcement. All of the things you mention happen every single day while you are all hard at work.

@Tom Ret What sacrifices are you speaking of?

@TX Lawman says "The Black Panthers targeted my family after I arrested one of them......"
Of course they did sweetheart, and when I'm dreaming I'm a Viking!!!!!

@Charlie says "Let's not forget to follow the money here, Pepsi bears some responsibility too..."
Then shouldn't the entire NFL all of it's players, the owners, hell why not the fans who go to the game and the TV viewer some of which I'm sure are cops.

"...her music and video provide is no more than propaganda that costs officers their lives"
WOW just WOW, you need a nap.

plato's playdough @ 2/20/2016 3:15 AM

Tom Ret nailed it. You are putting the department at full liability for anything the BLM group want to encourage, then blame PD for the fallout. Workin' for the payday that is sure to come, given past successes.

Let them eat BLACK PANTHERS.

Tom Ret @ 2/20/2016 7:38 AM

Percy- Your opinion really doesn't interest me. You are the type of person who would have to experience the sacrifices officers endure in order for you to believe it wasn't whining or police propaganda. I could tell you but like I said, I'm not interested in what your opinion is. Why don't you take the tests, get hired if you can, go through the academy and FTO program and hit the street for a few years and get back to us. You do understand this forum is for cops don't you? What it should not be is open to every dumb ass who has a bone to pick with law enforcement.

J. Johnson @ Retired LEO @ 2/20/2016 9:30 AM

I hope that all Law Enforcement in that area stick together and boycott her performance, if you can call it that, and not bring in other LEO's from surrounding areas. And while the money may be good, this is about principle and LEO's should stick together on this. And while the city will have to provide security outside the event, inside the fence is a private, for profit entity and tax payers should not have to foot the bill. And Percy you are just an amusement.

WellHello @ 2/20/2016 8:04 PM

Great, you just told every homegrown / terrorists where tens of thousands of people will be and not a single cop showing up.

What happened "we do this job because it's a calling"? If you don't want to work due to a pop singer not liking you..... We have bigger problems than we ever knew we had.

Yo @ 2/21/2016 9:02 AM

Does the city charge a fee to have police officers escort
For this type of event?
I think they should if they don't. Even though I think that she should not get any public official aide her with her hate message.

KenW @ 2/24/2016 7:48 AM

Tampa PD officers stick to your guns. I see a blue flu epidemic coming soon.

Trigger @ 2/26/2016 8:31 AM

I have been in similiar situations and have argued about working various details however the bottom line is that we took an oath to "preserve and protect" regardless of the politics. Should all hell break loose and a concert goer gets hurt or killed then fingers will be pointed at the Tampa Police Department for not doing their job. We in the profession are getting enough bad pr already from the various anti-cop groups. We have something called the First Amendment to the US Constitution that permits individuals like Beyonce, BLM, KKK, etc. to express their opinions whatever that opinion may be. In my 38 plus years working the streets I have been spit on, name called, threatened, and assualted during these details but if we are to remain professionals then we must work for the task at hand. I know there are those that will not agree with my opinion but to me and many other professionals if you can't take the heat then turn in your badge.
