2 Maryland Deputies Killed in Related Shootings

Two Harford County, MD, sheriff's deputies have died after a shooting both inside and near a restaurant in Abingdon late Wednesday morning, the head of the department said.

Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler didn't immediately identify the officers, and asked for "respect and patience during this difficult time for our agency," reports the Baltimore Sun.

He said the officers were veterans of the force, and said the department's prayers are with their families. "There are no words to describe what they're going through right now," Gahler said at a 5:15 p.m. press briefing.

Two additional officers fired weapons at the scene and have been placed on administrative leave, Gahler said outside the Panera Bread restaurant at the Boulevard at Box Hill. It was there, where he said earlier in the day, "We fully suspect that both deputies were shot by the same suspect."

The suspect, who died, was identified as David Brian Evans, 67. There were two warrants for Evans' arrest, Gahler said, one in Florida for assaulting a police officer and fleeing and eluding, and a civil warrant in Harford County.

One deputy was taken to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. The other was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

"Both deputies have succumbed to their injuries," Gahler said at the evening press briefing.

One deputy, with the court services division, was with the Sheriff's Office for 30 years; the other, with the agency for 16 years, was with the community services division.

"Both were two outstanding deputies who served the citizens of this county faithfully for 16 and 30 years, respectively," Gahler said.

The sheriff said he believes the deputy was targeted, saying, "The suspect took that action because he was in a police uniform. He was certainly targeting them."

At a press conference earlier in the day, Sheriff Gahler said deputies were called to a Panera Bread at a busy shopping area in Abingdon at about 11:46 a.m. for reasons that he would not divulge. After entering the restaurant, the deputy was fired on by a gunman and hit.

An additional deputy or deputies followed the gunman to a nearby apartment building. At that location, the second deputy was shot and the gunman was killed.

Gahler speculated that the two shootings occurred not more than 15 minutes apart and called the second shooting a "continuation of events" from the Panera attack.

RIP my brothers very sad day for all of
Us in blue. Be safe out there please we have huge targets on us now that this country seems to condone attacks on police.

Phil @ 2/11/2016 4:58 AM

As a Harford County Resident, this is one of the most tragic and heart breaking incident in it's history. My condolences goes out the family of those brave officers. Rest in peace.

Barney Fife @ 2/11/2016 7:22 AM

This is not a time for politics, but thank you Obama for creating this atmosphere of hatred and disrespect towards all of law enforcement. RIP brothers. Godspeed to you and many prayers of healing to your families.

Leonard @ 2/11/2016 10:30 AM

@Barney: Obama had nothing to do with incident and he hasn't done a thing to create the atmosphere of distrust toward LE. LE did that all by themselves. The idea that these officers were specifically sought out and targeted because they were cops is an exaggeration. The guys who did this was a criminal with active warrants who obviously did not want to go to jail. There was no systematic "targeting". But this is now the narrative that those in LE want to put forward in the media in a weak attempt to shield themselves from needed and justified scrutiny. My deepest sympathies to the families of these officers.

R.I.P. DEPUTIES, PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR AGENCY.

Leonard Mather @ 2/11/2016 6:29 PM

I now address the "Other Leonard." whose position is that Obama had nothing to do with the incident. Literally, "other Leonard" is correct. Figuratively, Obama has given many subliminal cues to diminish respect of LEOS. We remember Obama saying, "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon." Remember the Black Professor who was misconstrued as a "Maybe intruder" at his front porch? All he had to do to rectify that situation was cooperate, and comply with requests. Obama had a lot of positive to say about the Professor's stubborn noncompliance instead up recommending cooperation, following lawful commands and being understanding of the LEO's unique position. Obama prefers Al Sharpton as an adviser instead of Law Enforcement.

Martha Parker @ 2/12/2016 3:03 AM

President Obama had nothing to do with the atmosphere of distrust for law enforcement. This is an act solely orchestrated by this individual because he had a disregard for life and for order.

Lt. Stephen Englert @ 2/12/2016 8:13 AM

On behalf of Susquehanna Regional Police, Lancaster County, Pa. our hearts are heavy with your loss and our prayers go out to the families of the fallen deputies and the Hartford County Sheriffs Department.

Phil @ 2/12/2016 8:22 AM

See, here we go again, I am sadden that there are people in this country that want to blame all the ignorance, and injustice in this country to Obama. Lawlessness is everywhere. Disrespect for the police has always been there and everyone knows it. This is not about one man nor about the color of a person, this is about a person saying I am not going to be caught, and I will kill any cop that tries to get me. Assumptions, are just that, assumptions. In the mean time Leonard, your the only person that sees these subliminal clues. Everyone please pray for the family of the slain officers.

Dominic @ 2/19/2016 8:25 AM

Law-enforcement needs to stand strong this election cycle and defeat Obama's third term by voting for anyone other than a Democrat unless of course John F. Kennedy could be reincarnated. Can you imagine Obama or Hillary during the missile crisis?

TX Lawman @ 2/19/2016 9:55 AM

May the Lord be with their families and show them comfort. Your shift has ended...we have it now. Be safe Blue
