Black Lives Matter Activist Running for Mayor of Baltimore

February 04, 2016  |

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson filed to run for mayor of Baltimore on Wednesday night, joining a crowded Democratic primary race hours ahead of the registration deadline.

"It is true that I am a non-traditional candidate -- I am not a former mayor, city councilman, state legislator, philanthropist or the son of a well-connected family," Mckesson said in a Medium post announcing his candidacy. "I am an activist, organizer, former teacher and district administrator that intimately understands how interwoven our challenges and our solutions are."

Known simply as @deray to his nearly 300,000 Twitter followers, Mckesson, 30, is a Baltimore native who rose to prominence during the demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri.

In this presidential cycle, Mckesson has met with both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders as part of a broader effort to lobby for the end of "broken windows" policing and an increase in local oversight of police departments, WBAL TV reports.

He might just win. He seems to have the same credentials Obama had when he won. If this guy wins, Baltimore better hold onto it's ass. Good luck to all the LEO's there. JJG

I am sure he will disband their PD and replace them w/ the local black panther chapter.

That idiot gets elected and you wont be able to walk the streets at night in Baltimore.

J. Johnson @ 2/5/2016 7:53 AM

If he gets elected, then Baltimore deserves everything that he shall deliver. Sometimes it is best to let the idiots lead for a while to show the majority just how foolish they were to allow this to occur and what the consequences were of their actions.

bo2234 @ 2/5/2016 1:25 PM

The idiots HAVE been leading there. That's why it's in the shape it is.

Perhaps the Law enforcement community should get out and pump up the voters to go to the polls and ensure this dumbass does NOT get elected. I can tell you now I will NOT vote for anyone who has black lives matter as their platform. I believe ALL lives matter!

FDC @ 2/6/2016 4:06 AM

I hope the locals pull out all the stops and get everyone to the polls to stop this dumbass from getting elected. I will NOT vote for anyone who has black lives matter as their platform for election. I say ALL lives matter...

Baltimore needs someone with more credentials than this guy. The whole city requires significant economic revitalization and unfortunately none of the candidates have the experience to make things happen. In fact, the front runner left in disgrace at the end of her term. However, I do hope his candidacy keeps on the pressure for making reform of the police department. And make no mistake, the department needs it desperately. The zero tolerance policies of the OMalley crippled the city and created a rogue force, you can't have the police arrest a 1/6th of the population every year and not have negative effects on both citizens and the department.
