Chicago Chief Fired in Wake of McDonald Shooting Protests

December 01, 2015  |

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced he has dismissed Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, citing a lack of public trust in the police leadership in the wake of the high-profile shooting that eventually led to a white officer being charged with first-degree murder in the death of a black teen shot 16 times in a Southwest Side street last year.

Emanuel said he and McCarthy began discussing the future of the police department on Sunday. "This morning, I formally asked for his resignation," Emanuel said at a City Hall news conference where he appointed a task force to look at police accountability.

The mayor said it's an "undeniable fact" that public trust has eroded in the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Well CPD Superintendent McCarthy is the first person who needed to be fired here. Now Mayor Emanuel also needs to fire himself for allowing the Chicago crime and extreme violence rates to have climbed to they levels that they have historically been. Police know how to reduce violent and non-violent crime. The Mayor has to have the heroic courage to make the tough decisions to get the job done, instead of playing to his base. My guess is that unless this is done, the next police superintendent Emanuel hires will fare no better and neither will Chicago's citizens.

Is he "fired"???? Asking for a resignation to me seems like the mayor wants him to quit....

Cops who work of cities who do not support them are on strike and they should be. They are showing up for work but they are not going to do anything extra and do the bare minimum. Don't stick your neck out for citizen who hate you and a city government who will fire or prosecute you for political reasons. This is the deepest form of corruption when politicians will prosecute cops for political reasons. They muzzle and handcuff cops but want them to stop crime. They have lost their minds and they get the crime and corruption they deserve. I hope the officer is found not guilty.

GOOD!!!
Now if they could just fire officer Mctriggerfinger we might get somewhere.

AZBIGDOG @ 12/1/2015 12:33 PM

Not sure if it was too many shots or not enough. Or bad luck he was shooting at a person hopped up on PCP, which is illegal by the way, who pulled a knife out as soon as the police began to approach on foot. Maybe he just did not fall quick enough for the officer to realize the threat was over. Who knows? Maybe the mayor should have had better training going on. But surely an impartial jury will review all the evidence? But then again since the officer has been found guilty by media, politicians and the great bo, we all know he is headed to prison or the chair.

Fire officer McTriggerfinger??!!

The officer is charged with first degree murder!! ...and just looking at the video, for once, the charge may be justified... but a jury will decide the outcome.

But here's what I don't understand... If the officer has already been charged with first degree murder, what's the mass protest all about?

Outside of a public lynching what more could be done?

We all know that the protest is politically motivated...and the demonstrations might get violent once the "mercenary activists" arrive to loot and burn.

Emmanuel needs to take measures to stop the real Chicago crime spree. "Black on black" murder os the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about.
