VIDEO: D.C. Chief Urges Public to Attack Active Shooters, Terrorists to Save Lives

In a surprising comment, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier is encouraging ordinary citizens to subdue or even kill active gunmen if they can as the “best option for saving lives before police can get there.”

During an interview Sunday on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Chief Lanier was asked what should people do if they are in the vicinity of an active shooter like the ones who terrorized Paris on Nov. 13.

“Your options are run, hide, or fight,” the D.C. police chief said. “If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there.”

The District for decades had outlawed handguns until the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the ban in 2008. Since then, city leaders have enacted restrictive laws that are still being challenged in court by gun owners and pro-gun activists.

Chief Lanier, who has enthusiastically supported the city’s efforts to limit handgun ownership, admitted that her suggestion for the public in the midst of an active gunman does not reflect the longstanding advice offered by many police officials around the country, the Washington Times reports.

Old Timer Cop @ 11/23/2015 3:50 PM

How hypocritical can this woman get? She is actively trying to disarm the law abiding public, then has the gall to advise the very people she is trying to disarm to try to take out the terrorists before armed police arrive? Are you kidding me? I get the idea of fighting back to save one's lives, but why then is there such a need to fight the second amendment? Chief Lanier is a shining example of the utterly vacuous reasoning of the far leftist in our country. Our Capital deserves better. Buffoonery is a poor substitute for leadership!

G.L. Ladd @ 11/23/2015 4:02 PM

Hush Old Timer Cop. I don't know how old time you are, but I'm 41 years and counting. She had the guts to say what we all know to be true. She's not taking guns out of the hands of people, the politicians are. When you were a "Not Old Time Cop" did you create and pass the laws? Go have a nice adult beverage and put your rage away. Let the younger ones take over. They'll be OK.

Gary @ 11/23/2015 4:10 PM

I think she ain't quite right.
A disarmed public is recommended to fighting back? Sure. Take the bad guy's gun, use it on him, and then get prosecuted for possession of an unregistered firearm.
Nuts.

Gary @ 11/23/2015 4:12 PM

Great advise to a disarmed public to fight back.
Take the bad guy's gun, use it, and then run quickly away to avoid being arrested for possession of an unregistered gun.
Nuts.

tedb @ 11/23/2015 4:37 PM

At least this woman has more balls than most of the male chiefs in this country. Most of them are advising that you run, or hide under your desk, or, if you are REALLY feeling violent, throw your stapler at the bad guy. I don't support gun-grabbing, but she is at least telling it like so many of us know it has to be...take the SOB out and kill him, rather than standing there and attempting to dialogue with him while crap runs down your cowardly leg!

Tschako @ 11/23/2015 4:45 PM

This hypocrite not only is one of the foremost anti-gunner in DC, She is the chief who sent a bunch of guns to Diane Feinstein so she could wave them at the congress to get passage of her anti-gun agenda.

GL Ladd: Us old timers know things you don't.

UncleMike @ 11/23/2015 5:35 PM

Hopefully she's realized that an unarmed populace can't defend themselves and the LEO's are seldom close when SHTF.

Leonard Mather @ 11/23/2015 5:41 PM

I spent a total of 7 years in DC, four of which were at CUA for my PhD and then three more working at Howard U, as a "token White." A street person entered my Town House; door was NOT locked. He stormed toward me. I pulled my piece and when he saw it, he fled instantly. I reported this event to a DC LEO. He was a nice guy and told me that since I had un unregistered weapon, he would allow me to return it to my former jurisdiction (PA) instead of arresting me. I thanked him and relocated in VA within two months. As soon as I discovered I was living in a "no hope for protection with a firearm" zone, I left. DC is ideal for terrorists.

DW @ 11/23/2015 7:04 PM

Personally, I'm not interested in the politics of the DC issue. I'm pro-2nd, anyone/everyone who is not a prohibited possessor should own as many firearms as they want and can safely store. Cops don't make the law, we enforce the law. Some cops are of the opinion that John and Jane Q Taxpayer should not own guns. Those cops are welcomed to their own opinion . . . my opinion is, those cops are really stooopid. Now to the meat of the article. Should American citizens be prepared to engage and kill these terrorist animals. My opinion is "yes". If you are legally and physically able to carry a gun (and ancillary equipment) then you should seek/obtain the necessary training needed to be successful. For the most part citizens who participate in the shooting sports are as safe as any cop and those who participate in the defensive shooting sports are, generally speaking, better shooters than most cops. If I were not a cop, I would equip and prepare to engage these animals.

I have taught self defense against armed intruder attacks for several years. Although attacking an armed intruder may not be the first choice you should consider, it may quickly become the only choice you have if you want to stay alive. Chief Lanier said what is correct. Not politically correct, but she is correct. If all else fails, anyone who can, should attack the shooter, and not stop until the shooter is incapacitated. I recently attended a large concert and was not allowed to be armed with a LEOSA permit. I was told that they needed to know who had a weapon on the premises and they already had armed security. Interesting though, I did not see any of those attending being searched, and many people had back packs. At least let active and retired LEO's with proper credentials remain armed in gun free zones.

ftrnr @ 11/24/2015 3:59 AM

G.L. Ladd I think the point you missed is that Chief Lanier speaks out on both sides. She is right that fighting may be the only thing you can do in order to survive. She is also very into the fight against the people of DC being able to own/carry guns. She has spent years fighting against civilian gun ownership. She plays in the political arena and is now going back on years of her history, but not really. From what I have seen and heard in the last couple days she is still in the fight against civilian gun ownership. It is great to make a stand but you can't have it both ways.

Tom Ret @ 11/24/2015 6:17 AM

Is the chief being magnanimous or throwing a bone when she refuses to accept and back the constitutional right of firearm ownership and defense by non felon citizens while encouraging fighting with what you have at hand if your live is on the line?

Brian @ 11/24/2015 7:35 AM

Ok, come on guys. Give her a break. Obviously, if you own a ceramic Ninja knife set, throw it as hard as you can at the active shooter with the AK!
If they have a bomb, throw yourself on top of it! With ya chief!

ssc1911 @ 11/24/2015 1:15 PM

Chief Lanier can't have it both ways. Now she has come out and publically stated that law abiding people should be able to carry guns and shoot the bad guys (terrorists). A place like DC which has. murder, gangs and drugs, bad guys have guns and will always get them, not legally. The elected officials of DC need to be reminded that the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of a plaintiff over the DC's gun ban which had been in place since the mid seventies. Chief Lanier has to got to understand that law abiding people have a constitutional right to defend them selves, and not deny permits to persons who are able and lawfully allowed to carry. Training is necessary for defensive shooting
