VIDEO: Minnesota Deputy Killed in Hospital Gun Grab Incident

An Aitkin County, MN, investigator was shot and killed with his own duty pistol by an inmate at St. Cloud Hospital early Sunday morning, and the suspect later died after a confrontation with responding hospital security officers.

The deputy was identified as Investigator Steven Martin Sandberg, 60. He had worked with the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office since 1991, KTSP TV reports.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the suspect, identified as 50-year-old Danny Leroy Hammond of Aitkin, was being treated at the hospital and was also being investigated in connection to a domestic-related incident. The St. Cloud Hospital asked the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office to help monitor Hammond while he was there.

At about 5:15 a.m., the BCA said there was a struggle between Hammond and Sandberg, who was overseeing Hammond at the time. During the struggle, Hammond took Sandberg’s firearm, and killed the deputy, according to the BCA.

Security officers were able to get into the room, and a Taser was used against Hammond. Shortly after that, Hammond experienced a medical emergency and became unresponsive. Medical personnel performed life-saving operations on Hammond, but he died, the BCA said.
