A Phoenix police officer is in serious condition after he was shot multiple times on Wednesday during a traffic stop around 2:45 a.m., reports ABC 15.

Phoenix police said it is unclear if the incident was an ambush. Phoenix police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the officer was shot multiple times but is expected to survive thanks to his vest. The officer is reportedly out of surgery and is expected to survive, police said.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said both suspects were arrested around 1:30 p.m. after an extensive search.

UPDATE 09/17/15:

Authorities have charged a man in the shooting of a Phoenix police officer during a routine traffic stop, reports KTAR.

Police said 26-year-old Michael James Rogers was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault and one count of unlawful flight. The 40-year-old officer was shot multiple times but was expected to survive.
