'Black Lives Matter' Post Leads to North Carolina Chief's Retirement

September 16, 2015  |

Surf City, N.C., Police Chief Mike Halstead has retired effective immediately following an emergency meeting called in reference to a Facebook post he made. Major Ron Shanahan will take over as Interim Chief, reports WECT.

Town leaders and Halstead have agreed to 60 days of severance pay following his decision to retire.

According to Town Manager Larry Bergman, the police department has rules regarding social media. "He put that information out, that was intended for his friends and colleagues and peers, but it was a public statement and there are people that were offended," Bergman said.

Surf City Mayor Zander Guy called the emergency meeting in reference to Halstead's post he made to his personal page on Sep. 3, which said in part, "Open letter from a Police Chief, this Black Lives Matter group is nothing more than an American born terrorist group brought on by the lie of the hands up don't shoot during the criminal thug Michael Brown incident. The FBI and other Government Law Enforcement groups need to step up and put a stop to this…"

Bergman said he spoke with Halstead about the post after it was brought to his attention. Bergman also said the chief is apologetic for how his statements have been interpreted, and that he removed the post of his own accord.

The town should applaud the Chief for telling the true facts!

What ever you do don't post or tell the truth as it is no longer politically correct or offended anyone. The safest course is just stay mute. On the other hand, how about the thousands of officers who are offended by politicians who don't back them and take sides with a domestic terrorist organization that chants they want to kill cops. Maybe it is time for the officers , as one voice, to tell the politicians to either back them or it is time for the officers to stand down and let chaos reign. If the politicians don't like it, they will find out quickly that finding replacements will be a daunting task. Our country is coming off the wheels with Obama and his irk driving the train. The DOJ needs to be told that action on their part is not a request but a demand and if not met then they best put out the word to the public to arm themselves. Man, I feel sorry for the officers in this country who have been subjected to this BS.

Ya, black lives matter, until their death, caused by a white cop's gun. Even though it was rightfully so, it becomes a nation wide issue only because the "media has control of it". Justifiyable shootings of black people by cops are being scrurtinized closely nationwide, with news media coverage on all of them. Does the media cover black people shooting white cops? Not the least bit! Their not interested, as that's not news, it happens all the time! And it's to a point of where white cops are going to hesitate fire their gun, in fear of being tomorrow's headlines, which may cost them their lives. Will that make nationwide news........not hardly!

He posted the unvarnished truth -- it seems the truth is not valued an longer in America.

Consider the damage this is causing to the neighborhoods that are most in need of assistance. I've been reading articles about no go areas, self removal of officer from involvement, doubling up of officers in cars thereby reducing patrol coverage, etc. They are shooting themselves in the foot because of fear of offending. I remember back to the blue flu days. Seems like I see a flu pandemic on the horizon.

The officer's ignorance and racist attitude was finally exposed.....good riddance.
