VIDEO: Las Vegas Officers Ambushed at Traffic Light, Suspect in Custody

A suspect is in custody after two officers were ambushed in their patrol car and one was shot in the hand Sunday afternoon.

The shooting occurred around noon near Tropicana Avenue and Nellis Boulevard. Police reported three shots were fired at the officer "ambush-style" and no shots were fired by police, KTNV TV reports.

Police said a man approached the squad car and fired with a semi-automatic handgun at the two officers inside the vehicle. The police were leaving the scene of a disturbance call at the 99 Cents Only store and were stopped at a light when the shots were fired.

The officers then exited the vehicle and were able to apprehend the suspect outside a 7-Eleven.

This is the second officer to be shot in the line of duty this month. Officer Jeremy Robertson was shot in the upper leg Friday morning when responding to a call in the 6700 block of Oveja Circle, near Rainbow Boulevard and Alta Drive. Two suspects were taken into custody.

In response to that shooting, Sheriff Joe Lombardo mandated Friday that officers now ride in pairs. Metro sergeants say Sunday's shooting suspect was subdued in part because of the new rule.

Time for vehicle armor.
Gonna have to start wearing my tac vest and helmet everywhere I go from now on.
When I roll up to a light I stay at least 50' behind the vehicle in front of me and never roll up and stop next to another vehicle, I always hold back so my front tires are at least behind the rear bumper of the vehicle in the lane next to me and always in a lane where I have an escape route or enough distance that if someone gets out to take a shot at me I can have enough distance that I can get some speed up to run em over.

GREAT about time, ALL officers especially now need to be two person units end of story. If response times get longer, calls take longer and pile up too fine bad, the public can hire more cops or support those that they have otherwise shut up buy a gun and protect yourself. Cops lives matter too.

I'm glad officers are ok. Sorry this suspect was captured. As long as he is breathing, he will be a problem.

Tom Ret @ 9/8/2015 6:51 AM

As KevCopAz said above, all agencies need to go to 2 man cars. The public may not support the extended response times but too bad. The blues must come together to back their own, the politicians will not. Anyone who takes on the cops should know that agencies will put the full weight of their manpower into the effort to get them irrespective of other calls backing up. The public needs to know this as well. The political correctness about police looking too militaristic
needs to be silenced as everyone with half a brain should know by now that the police are under attack and we have a president whose priorities are global warming and gay rights. Cops getting killed are no concern to him.

2 Officers to a car is the way that it should be. Tough if the general public does not like it. 2 reason they do not like it, less cops to respond and the thugs don't like 2 officers on them at a stop. That's just too bad, if the public doesn't like it they can yell at their President to do something about the criminals.

SOMEONE IN CONGRESS NEEDS TO REPEAL OBAMA'S RULING THAT THE MILITARY CAN NOT GIVE FOR FREE DE-COMISSIONED ARMORED VEHICLES TO LOCAL POLICE AND SHERIFF DEPARTMENTS. THE BAD GUYS ARE CARRYING DE-COMISSIONED MILITARY ARMOUR WHY CAN'T LOCAL POLICE AND SHERIFF DEPUTIES AVAIL THEM SELVES TO THE SAME WEAPONS AND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT. OBAMA SUPPORTS THE NATIONS CRIMINALS, THIS IS NOW OBVIOUS. OUR SENATORS, CONGRESSMEN AND WOMEN NEED TO GET BEHIND OUR LOCAL HEROES AND TELL OBAMA THAT THE LIVES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT'S MEN AND WOMAN COUNT. YOUR LIFE MR. OBAMA DOES NOT! WHEN YOU GET OUT ON THE STREET WITH NO VEST AND UN-ARMORED VEHICLES, THEN WE WILL CONSIDER YOU A LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNER. UNTIL THEN STOP PASSING LAWS THAT ENDANGER THE LIVES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ACCROSS THE NATION.
