Wisconsin Officer Confronted by Crowd, Punched

September 04, 2015  |

Latonya B. James, 40, and daughter Nanyamka N. James, 20, were arrested after a Madison, Wis., officer was punched in the face.
Latonya B. James, 40, and daughter Nanyamka N. James, 20, were arrested after a Madison, Wis., officer was punched in the face.

A Madison, Wis., police officer was confronted by a crowd and punched after a street fight on Prairie Road Wednesday night, according to a release from Madison police, reports WISC-TV.

The officer stopped in the area of Prairie Road and Jacobs Way around 6:20 p.m. after spotting a large number of people in the street. He said that as he approached he saw a woman punch a man in the face, and he could see that the woman had a can of pepper spray.

The officer said that as he went to arrest the woman he was surrounded by a crowd that was voicing anti-police sentiments, including "We need to start killing these officers."

Police said the woman's daughter was grabbing the officer while trying to free her mother. The officer said he tried to defuse the situation by explaining to the crowd that the woman had just punched someone and was armed with pepper spray. Police said his words were ignored, and the struggle with the two people continued.

The older woman punched the officer in the face and grabbed him by the throat, according to the release.

The two women were arrested when more officers arrived.

"He demonstrated fantastic patience and restraint in dealing with these folks," Madison Police Department Capt. Vic Wahl said. "He was able to literally get assaulted in the midst of a large crowd and still take these women into custody without causing any injuries to anyone."

"He was able to get assaulted in a large crowd and still arrest two people without causing harm to anyone else." WTF?? Why is that ok?? I didn't know we get paid to get assaulted??? How bout spraying everyone in the crowd, or swinging a nightstick at everyone surrounding him??? How bout arresting numerous people for mob action??? It is getting out of control, by giving these animals an inch- they are EXPECTING 2 feet.!!! I'm not talking talking about average citizens, I'm speaking of the degenerate animals that make up 90% of the police departments calls. Our society is getting out of hand.

Good job Officer! Too bad that you had to suffer getting punched in the face. I wonder if this might have been a set up fight to lure officers in. Sounds like the BLM. A way to ambush another officer.

Latonya, you must be a great mother to teach your daughter to disrespect authority. Why do you want your daughter to become a dirtbag like yourself. Your actions today could possibly get her killed if she confronts an officer the same way you did. This officer showed great control. Was he white or black? I bet that makes a difference to you. I bet you have a criminal record. Officer, keep doing a great job but don't get hurt or killed by hesitating.

It is sad that when there are reports of an Officer doing the right thing, the media decides to leave it ignored, but they try to skew anything negative regarding the police out of proportion. Good job on the officer! This is what people need to see.

Capt. Vic Wahl said, "He demonstrated fantastic patience and restraint in dealing with these folks"

He should have said "these savages" not "folks"..

Here is a copper doing his job, trying to help a person and break up a fight, the crowd chants, "We need to start killing these officers." ???

I would have shown up in force and arrested them all, and if the, crowd attacked, I'd give them the force needed. This is typical of the "Black Lives Matter" movement and the lies of the savages who follow them.

I can't believe this coward actually said that. How the hell does ANY cop do any work for a sackless wonder like this??? It showed restraint that "he could literally get assaulted" but not cause injuries to anyone???

If you assault a cop the suspect SHOULD be injured.

They don't know what trouble they are causing. The people in the crowd are like animals in a feeding frenzy. Eventually there will be an end to this stupidity and disrespect. The police will not be the losers. Be safe officers, when put in fear for your life, don't hesitate and shoot straight.

I will say it again, it is time to go to 2 man cars. This officer did an outstanding job under the circumstances but could have turned tragic if he was mob rushed and disarmed and then assaulted or shot. It is not worth it to single handedly
brave the odds to wade into a situation without sufficient manpower to handle the situation which will no doubt result in little to no jail time. When you are being assaulted, restraint is not what I would propose but overwhelming force. This milk toast approach that so many administrators applaud is leading to more attacks on the police as the scum bags are more embolden.

I'm the last of a long line of cops in my family. My boy is the only son of an only son of an only son. I never thought I would think this, but I have done my best to encourage him to do ANYTHING but be a cop. (I'm retired from a severe t-bone crash into my driver's door that very, very nearly killed me, so it hasn't been a hard sell)

Animals plain and simple...Glad to know the Officer came out ok. These two animals need to be put away for a whiles. They're really lucky that nothing else happend to them. Hope they get what's coming to them.
