The man charged with the ambush murder of a Texas sheriff's deputy reportedly has a history of mental illness and one of his court-appointed attorneys says he will plead not guilty to the charges.

Shannon J. Miles is being held without bond in the Harris County Jail in the murder of Deputy Darren Goforth Friday night.

The Associated Press reports Miles' criminal history dates back to 2005 and includes an arrest in Austin in 2012 that led to Miles being sent to a state mental hospital for several months.

In 2012, the Travis County District Attorney's Office charged Miles with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he got into a fight at a homeless shelter over a remote control, prosecutor Joe Frederick said. Miles was found to be mentally incompetent in October 2012 and he was sent to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon, Texas.

There you go, if you deliberately sneak up on a LEO and then shoot him repeatedly until you empty the pistol, you are obviously mentally incompetent. I guess all those other crimes that were not so serious that never came out, except for what appears to have been one serious felony? And if he was mentally incompetent, then why was he was released?

In our world, we euthanize injured animals. This guy is a sick animal who needs to be put to sleep. He does not belong in our world. All men and women like him are cowards. Anyone who shoots unarmed people, in this fashion, should be put to sleep just like the animal that they are. I would like to be the one who throws the switch on this sick animal.

Well being a Texan all my life I sure as hell hope they don't find this s.o.b. insane. he knew what he was doing, by all the little shit that he did right after. Like hiding the gun. Hopefully the s.o.b. will just hang himself in his cell. P.O.S.

Stephen @ 9/1/2015 8:43 AM

Where did he get the pistol?

kevCopAz @ 9/1/2015 1:04 PM

I also think he is sane enough to try him based on his actions. But say he is insane? Don't folks realize that Black Lives Matter and other racial hating cop hating groups are to blame to an extent? Folks that are insane, who fall for this anti cop/anti racial crap and fled up and set off by this type of rhetoric!. News media, when will you learn that as the Brits do, do NOT NAME the suspect, DO NOY glamorize or villains the defendant, ignore him/her completely. Same with this Black lIves Matter Hands up demonstrations crap. If it was never televised or reported it would dry up and blow away in days. YOU THE MEDIA have a hand in these comp killings also. Don't give me "its news and a duty to report " crap, You make it news when you report it, not the other way around. People, normal folks could care less about these freaks and this anti cop/racial stuff, check the polls even the majority of Black (reasonable) folks do not support B;lack Lives Matter, what does that tell you?

scott @ 9/1/2015 2:17 PM

In my youth this POS would not have been given the opportunity to plead insanity. There was a day that killing a LEO was virtually a defacto death sentence. Now we have to understand why this POS is like he is.

Leonard Mather @ 9/1/2015 3:51 PM

Speaking as a Forensic Psychologist, Miles exhibited evidence aplenty that his cognitive processing skills were intact, planning, thinking, avoiding, etc. such that the plea for "not knowing right from wrong" at the time of the crime will NOT fly. All the comments regarding Miles being a POS are on target; readers should gain solace from the fact that Miles lawyer is doing his job and pleading his case since we have a court system that is adversarial. Many years ago, lawyers were called "Alientists." Defense lawyers still are.

A blind man could see this one coming. He will be put in a mental hospital where he will be "cured" in less than one year and he will get out and do this over and over. This always was his plan.

plato's playdough @ 9/2/2015 12:50 AM

Find the psychiatrist who authorized his release. Hold him responsible.

Kojack58 @ 9/2/2015 5:51 AM

This is whats wrong in America today. It's okay to kill a police officer and then plead insanity. We need to clean out death row and quit paying for all the people that don't care about human life. Exhaust their appeals and fulfill the sentence and killing an officer with malice afore thought should be automatic no discussion.

deputy moose @ 9/2/2015 1:33 PM

This guy isn't legally insane, he's just dumber than dirt.
