Man Held in Ambush Murder of Texas Deputy

August 29, 2015  |

A man "believed to be the alleged gunman" in the killing of a uniformed Houston-area sheriff's deputy was in custody Saturday morning, Sgt. William Kennard of the Texas Department of Public Safety told CNN.

The man's mother called the Harris County Sheriff's Department about her son, Kennard said. "All the information she had heard led to him."

A red pickup truck was parked at the spot where deputies took the person in custody, according to video shot by KTRK. Authorities had said the suspect drove away from the shooting in a red Ford Ranger.

The suspect shot Deputy Darren H. Goforth, 47, while the deputy was fueling his patrol car, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said.

The gunman walked up to Goforth from behind and opened fire for no apparent reason, said Deputy Thomas Gilliland, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. When Goforth fell to the ground, the gunman stood over him and shot him some more, Gilliland said. Goforth died at the scene.

What's the suspects race? Just saying, you are all thinking it.
Be safe, be cautious and watch over each other, we are all targets in the eyes of the public & a lot of admin too!

UncleMike @ 8/29/2015 7:49 AM

The BLM movement has directed it's supporters, via public media, to kill LEO's whenever possible.
Stay alert Brothers and Sisters.
America is at war.

kevCopAz @ 8/29/2015 7:57 AM

I agree we are at war, perhaps not a full blown race war, but certainly a war on LEOs. I have to keep saying, who is hunting who? When you look at the stats, especially this year, Cops may have been killed more then Black Male suspects.

Ken @ 8/29/2015 8:16 AM

I retired after 44 years as a LEO....I think I see many early retirements in the future. A segment of our society has declared outright war against all LEOs everywhere. Where is the pubic outrage? There should be marched in the streets...

Glenn stephens @ 8/29/2015 8:39 AM

May God give your family peace during this time as surely you are with him. 10-76 Heaven.

Tony @ 8/29/2015 9:30 AM

No one does this in their right mind. Letvs not do as the race-baiters do and jump to conclusions. Let the justice system take its course, let the skilled investigators investigate. We can pray: for the assassinated Deputy, for his family, for that Sheriff's Office, and for this country.

Jon Retired LEO @ 8/29/2015 11:31 AM

I echo uncleMike's sentiments. He is right on with his comment. America's Law Enforcement is definitely at war.

Jon Retired LEO @ 8/29/2015 1:26 PM

Rest in Peace Deputy Goforth. You were ambushed by a very lowlife coward of the worst kind. Deepest condolences to your family and the Harris County Sheriff's Department. May God bless and watch over your family. How about it Mr. President, where are your condolences?

Morning Eagle @ 8/29/2015 1:38 PM

Texas has the death penalty. If this guy is convicted he has certainly earned it. And don't let him sit there for 15 years filing appeals. It won''t bring Deputy Goforth back but will certainly keep this POS from killing anyone else. R.I.P. Deputy and may your family and friends be able to find some solace as time goes on.
Uncle Mike is correct whether folks want to admit it or not.

Leonard Mather @ 8/29/2015 3:00 PM

When Perps like this are captured, I recommend that they be delivered to ISIS recruiters so as to end up in Syria ASAP. We could then wait for the Left Liberals and Media to claim that such action is "cruel and unusual punishment." That charge, by virtue of its own statement places them in an awkward position as it is at odds with Obama's glorification of Muslim accomplishments and refusal to use the label "Islamic Terrorism," or his propensity to call the Ft. Hood terrorism "work place violence." He may even call the Tsarnaev's actions at the Boston Marathon bombing "Pressure Cooker Violence" to avoid the Muslim Shaheen element.

It ceases to amaze me, a news crew is killed and its 24 hour 7 day a week news. Have a Police Officer killed and its 1 or 2 short news spots. What a screwed up system.

westcoastleo @ 8/29/2015 11:16 PM

So where is Obama? Where is his circus group of traveling entertainers, clowns, acrobats, and animal trainers marching hand to hand, in a hands up don’t shoot parade? Where are the paid protesters? Where are the loud mouth gangster core idiots running the streets and looting stores?
This is what “they” have wanted all along in the last three years to kill hard workin good coppers and throw the rest in jail for trumped up charges.
It’s cop hunting time in the U.S. and you can blame the “Black lives matter” terrorists on all of it. And, the leader of it all is Obama. He has done more since 2007 to divide the races in this country more than anyone in the past 300 years.

CNN reports the subject to be a black male. Shannon J. Miles.

plato's playdough @ 8/30/2015 4:09 AM

You know, I don't make race-baiting remarks, I don't hold the president responsible, and I have attempted to provide links to sites that amplify information introduced by the Police Magazine article.

I cannot imagine why my entries merit the response "Your comments are pending approval."

James Graham @ 8/30/2015 6:48 AM

You are an idiot. The races have been divided ever since blacks were kidnapped and brought to america and enslaved. We as white americans have treated blacks, hispanics, asians and gays and women horribly forever. Unless you are a white male with a stupid ass rebel flag on your truck you get treated as subhuman in this country. It is horrible that the deputy that murdered. Nothing will change that. But blaming the situation on our president just shows your a racist bigot. Drape yourself in a rebel flag and show who and what you really are.

Ima Leprechaun @ 8/30/2015 11:14 AM

My Condolences to the Deputy and his Family.

Ima Leprechaun @ 8/30/2015 11:16 AM

Obviously the shooter had problems. I fear he will be acquitted because he is mentally incompetent to stand trial. He will go to a hospital for less than a year and become "cured" and he will get out and do the exact same thing again.

James Graham @ 8/31/2015 3:30 AM

Why would policemag.com post racist bigoted rhetoric ?........

tedb @ 8/31/2015 9:10 AM

James Graham: Please review your own posting. Is that not "Racist, bigoted rhetoric?" God bless the deputy's family. His wife has already written a heart-breaking letter. Also, God bless the suspect's mother for having the moral fortitude to make the call. She clearly taught him right from wrong.

P. Kelley @ 8/31/2015 9:55 AM

I'm sure that investigators have already debunked that alibi once mom provided a list of stores they shopped at and surveillance videos failed to show Mr. Miles as a patron. I wish the public would use their heads and a little (un)common sense and realize that there's no way his agency would botch this case by a knee jerk decision to arrest before thoroughly gaining enough evidence to nail this guy. SMH..

Robert Cook @ 8/31/2015 11:07 AM

Another terrible tragedy...and I don't know where the "death spiral" we are on will end.
1. The crazies use incidents like Michael Sleger's shooting to justify inciting hatred on police. (this ambush / the 2014 Las Vegas ambush, etc..)
2. These incidents place police are on a higher alert..and I feel this causes more incidents where unarmed shootings occur (which may or may not be criminally justified; but morally / civil not justified).
Which increases #1 above; which increases #2 ....and so on.
So, how do we stop the death spiral?

Many might not like it, but I think the only solution is to increase communication and transparency (grand jury changes, release discipline files, etc...but that comes at a cost of LEO privacy. I feel the other solution is to get rid of "broken windows" policing OR find a better method than currently used...it alienates too many.
Or do we all buy guns and body armor and stay in our houses, kids go to school online, etc?

staniel @ 8/31/2015 5:11 PM

My prayers to the family and the Sheriff's office. Although I believe where the blame should sit, I would like to find a solution to stop this mess. And caving into the public just for peace is not what I mean. I'd like to see a solution that allows us to put the criminals in prison without giving up our safety. Let's talk solutions. Remember, the "rebel flag" was the flag of southern Democrats, so let's stop the blame game. It plays into the media's game of inaction on our part.
