VIDEO: Protesters Block Oakland Freeway After Police Kill Carjacking Suspect

A 24-year-old man shot by police Wednesday afternoon after a pursuit and alleged carjacking attempt in West Oakland died at a hospital from his injuries, authorities said.

The fatal shooting sparked a protest that started in the area of 27th Street and Martin Luther King Way in Oakland. Posts on social media show that at least 100 people gathered in the area at 8 p.m. to protest the officer-involved shooting.

At around 10:15 p.m., video from the NBC Bay Area helicopter showed protesters blocking lanes on Interstate 980 near Interstate 880 in Oakland. Police responded to the area to clear the traffic jam.

Earlier in the day, Oakland Police Officer Johnna Watson said officers spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to a previous armed robbery at 2:39 p.m. in the area of 69th Avenue and International Boulevard.

The officers attempted to pull the driver over, but he fled, leading police on a pursuit through Oakland city streets. An Oakland police helicopter tracked the car during the pursuit, Watson said.

The pursuit lasted about seven miles until the suspect crashed into another car on 27th Street between Northgate Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Watson said.

The suspect ran from the car and, armed with a gun, tried to carjack another driver, Watson said.

Arriving officers confronted the suspect, who reportedly advanced towards them with the gun. Three officers opened fire, striking the suspect, according to Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent.

Its obvious to everyone with a brain. Even when the suspect caused their own death being a criminal ignored in criminal activity these folks seem to thinks ok to break the law not knowing any facts and "protesting", more likely they are just either misinformed, ignorant thugs themselves or race baiters, or perhaps all of those.

Don't see roads blocked with griving protesters in Chicago where more young B/ms are shot per year then any other cause of death and being shot by fellow B/ms NOT cops. How about the Black community protesting this deaths and not the deaths of criminal thugs?

The race baiters don't like it when one of their own commit a crime and get stopped. In this case it was carjacking which is a felony. The piece of garbage was advancing toward officers with a gun drawn. Thankfully no officers were injured.

Soooo, we're not supposed to return fire when some asshole shoots at us? Damn, I knew it was someone other then his fault that he got shot and all those other lowlifes have to go out and "protest". I wonder how much of a drop in crime would occur if kalifornia passed a concealed weapons law? But we can't do that, there would be blood running in the streets....Blues, Stay Safe.

Unfortunately this is the sign of the times, and all these animals know that its wrong, but they protest anyways. To riot, steal and destroy property. This is only the beginning. In about a week or 2 that "straight outta compton" is coming out. WATCH EACH OTHER'S BACKS!!!!

When the police have to do their job and take the life of a thug, the animals come out. Police everywhere are doing a fine job. Why is this society so wanting to support the criminals. What has happened. The good must take back society. Officers, keep doing your job. Thugs, keep running at police with a gun and get what you need. Officers, keep shooting straight and go home every shift.

Bud, Amen! Could not have said it better! Been there, 20 year Deputy Sheriff involved in 2 shootings, happily retired!

For many out there, here is the formula:

protestor = idiot

I'm not saying at all that people who don't like the police should not be given the right to peaceably assemble. However, when something like this happens (criminal suspect, pursuit, weapon, attempted carjacking, refusal to comply), I wonder what these idiots are thinking when they are "protesting". Meanwhile, officers are getting literally executed for being peacemakers.

I'm hoping to get to retirement and keep my sanity, Chris. I'm glad you made it out in one piece!
