A Richmond, Va., officer is recovering after he was shot in the arm on Wednesday afternoon in an exchange of fire with a suspect. The suspect was killed. Their identities have not yet been released.

Police told WWBT TV that officers were responding to reports of a man armed with a gun in the 2200 block of West Cary Street, at Meadow Street at 5:21 Wednesday night. Investigators say four officers approached the suspect and he started running. He then allegedly turned back with a gun, and shots were fired.

One officer was struck, with the bullet passing through his arm. Police returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect.

The officer was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment, and is said to be responsive. Police Chief Alfred Durham says the officer is a nine-year veteran of the force, and his wife is with him in the hospital. Chief Durham says the officer "will be fine."

Another officer who was responding to the shooting call flipped his patrol vehicle over near Broad and Lombardy streets. Police say that officer will also be OK.

While this was a black suspect and a white officer, Chief Durham kept reiterating that this isn't a race issue. He said a weapon was recovered from the scene that did not belong to the officers.
