President Barack Obama Commutes Sentences of 46 Drug Offenders

President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentences of 46 drug offenders, saying in a video posted online Monday that the men and women were not "hardened criminals" and their punishments didn't match the crimes they committed, reports CNN.

Obama said the move was part of his larger attempt to reform the criminal justice system, including reviewing sentencing laws and reducing punishments for non-violent crimes. With Monday's announcement, Obama has commuted more sentences than any president since Lyndon B. Johnson.

"I believe that at its heart, America is a nation of second chances, and I believe these folks deserve their second chance," Obama said in the video.

The move brings the number of Obama's commutations to nearly 90. Most of those have been for federal prisoners incarcerated for drug offenses who were slapped with long sentences mandated under guidelines set during a drug-and-crime wave in the 1980s. Under current sentencing guidelines most of those prisoners would have already finished serving time.

Of the 46 prisoners whose sentences were commuted on Monday, 13 were sentenced to prison for life.

Wow-I didn't realize how mislead I've been! For the past THIRTY EIGHT years as a LEO I thought the JUSTICE system was most qualified to determine who should be imprisoned...but then again, he's just following Arnold Scwhartzeneggers lead (he commuted the sentence of a murderer who just happened to be the son of a very powerful California politician).

Since by his own admission he has used drugs himself, including cocaine, this is no surprise. He couldn't care less about the deaths caused by those who deal drugs----the very people whose sentences he commuted

Way to go Mr. President! I suppose that they will all receive food stamps and other government subsidies along with their freedom until they can get their former occupations rolling again. Wonder how many votes that this latest act garnered.

Corporal James Barth @ 7/13/2015 9:25 PM

I have no problem with giving certain offenders a second chance, but nowhere in this article did I read that these 46 drug offenders were first time offenders !! How many second chances do we give a skell.

S.S. @ 7/14/2015 9:20 AM

Good job mr. president you are sending our young ones out there the perfect message. P.O.S.!

Tom Ret @ 7/14/2015 3:25 PM

Obama is a disgrace as president. Unfortunately, he can do a lot more damage in the time he has left in office. I suspect Obama's positions on gays and drugs goes hand and glove with his personal proclivities. At this point in time anyone who takes Obama's word for anything is a real dolt.

Daniel @ 7/16/2015 10:47 PM

I didn't see it in the article, but were they all illegals, too? Was this part of the 168,000 he released last month?

Tone @ 7/17/2015 12:54 AM

I guess you perfect souls don't believe in second chances, so surely you all won't ever need one or has ever been given a second chance. So way to go to those who believe that the system wasn't and remains broken. So the President get's the blame because he's calling a major problem in this country on the carpet? Though i don't agree with everything from President Obama, he surely isn't the disgrace you account to Mr. Tom! And Jon really? "They will receive food stamps?" Any of you guys up top ever get a second chance? Due share. Probably not. Have any of you ever committed a crime no one knows about? Probably not. Have any of you ever lied about anything ever? Probably not. If any of you are willing to be honest then guess what? Mistakes are made by everybody & most of us have been given 2nd chances & 3rd, & 4th. But because its Obama...shame on him! You guys are too funny. And Sgt D, majority politicians admit to this flawed justice system. Flawed Sir!

My goodness I do believe that I made Mr. Tone upset. How horrifying! how long did you serve as a corrections officer?

Tone @ 7/23/2015 10:35 PM

Jon Retired Leo..Whether I served in corrections in the past one day or one year, it don't take a rocket scientist to know that this site is anti-Obama. That man isn't the blame in everything wrong in this country.! And for the record there's not a comment on this site that can upset me! Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I'm just as passionate as the next officer in his/her feelings toward a matter.
