Escaped Cop Killer Sweat Shot and Captured in New York

June 28, 2015  |

Police have captured convicted murderer David Sweat, who escaped from a maximum security prison in upstate New York more than three weeks ago, three officials told ABC News.

Sweat is "under the control of law enforcement," the officials said.

Clinton County Sheriff Dave Favro told ABC News that Sweat is wounded.

His accomplice, Richard Matt, was shot and killed by a border patrol SWAT team Friday afternoon in Elephant's Head, New York, just 50 miles away from the prison, after he was spotted by a law enforcement officer in the woods.

Can we put him in a cell with the people who helped him escape? They have so much to discuss.

Sam Donald @ 6/28/2015 2:33 PM

It cost so much to get him. Would it have been cheaper to offer a hefty reward and the citizens do the job?

JBP @ 6/28/2015 3:37 PM

Should have killed the bastard and be done with him... now lock him solitary and lose the key.

Congratulations to all involved in the capture of Escapee Sweat. Having had the honor to work with the NYDOC; NYSP; and the ESU from Rikers; once again, it was a "Job Well Done" by all involved.

FezzBudikah @ 6/28/2015 5:11 PM

I'm glad they caught him so Kevin Tarsia's won't have to stress over the holiday and anniversary of his death with Sweat still on the loose

Jon Retired LEO @ 6/28/2015 6:36 PM

Sounds like the Officer that got him aimed a bit low. But congrats to him anyway for a job well done being alone like he was. I know what you mean about having a lot to discuss but I want to see him in administrative segregation the rest of his natural life since death isn't an option in New York.

Exactly Tschako! Can you imagine that conversation? "Hey guys 51 miles was my goal...which one of you's snitched?"
