Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck said Wednesday he was "very concerned" by an officer's fatal shooting of an unarmed homeless man in Venice Beach, Calif., saying he had not yet seen any evidence that would justify the shooting, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Beck said he had reviewed a security tape showing the incident, but did not detail what it showed. He cautioned that the investigation was still in its early stages, but said that so far, "I don't see the supporting evidence that I normally would."

"Any time an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that," he said. "I have not seen those extraordinary circumstances at this point."

Beck said the LAPD would host a town hall meeting in Venice on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

The man, whom friends said was known by the nickname "Dizzle," was described as a transient. He was in his 20s, L.A. County coroner's officials said. Police were reportedly called by an employee at a business who said the man was harassing customers.

How about, since in your own words Chief Beck "the investigation is still in its early stages" , you keep your pie hole shut until the investigation is complete. Comments like yours could easily taint an objective investigation not to mention that it reinforces your reputation for throwing your cops under the bus.

Beck also is corrupt in other ways. Eg., as to CCW he believes ordinary citizens shouldn't be allowed to have them. His policy is that his buddies and well-connected people can have them. And favored bureaucrats like judges and D.A.'s get them automatically. But not taxpaying citizens, no matter how needing or well trained.

I agree Retired Chief, can tell you are old (correct) school. Beck is more concerned about his staying as Chief then backing the cops under his command. He is a spineless bureaucrat as far as I can tell based on his past "decisions". Glad he is in LA

I agree 100% with Retired Chief. It sounds like Chief Beck is in an awful big hurry to throw his officers under the bus. Could it be that he is trying to make an impression on the new Attorney General? We will never know some of these things but we can speculate.

Tone @ 5/8/2015 10:29 PM

Based from the comments of Chief Beck it sounds like to me a balanced point. Throwing his officers under the bus? Where's the humanity and sensitivity for human life? Another man is dead who by the way was unarmed. But this group above me don't see that..You all are blindly more concerned about the officers which by the way explains why this world is so hateful. I'm an officer and have the upmost respect for officers, but i refuse to side with any law enforcement that over reacts and kills another unjustifiably. What threat was posed for that man to be killed? Police are the law, we're not above it! I wish this website allowed the pics of those commenting could be scene so the world can truly understand why we're where we are! Shame on all of you! R.I.P homeless man. Prayerfully your in a better place where no man, but God can judge you! Your safe now from struggle and more free from the hatred that moves this world closer to its edge. God even bless the officer that killed you!

DietSoda @ 5/11/2015 11:05 AM

Tone, you have no idea what you are talking about. No one is making a judgment whether the shooting was justified or not. They are simply saying it is wrong for the Chief to make those comments prematurely. No one is siding with officers for an unjustified shooting or saying anything about the man who was killed. They are only saying wait until the investigation is complete to comment. You say "shame on you". Shame on them for what? Shame on you for calling this an unjustified shooting when you have no facts. You're an idiot. You call yourself an Officer. What kind of officer are you? Security?

Clay @ 5/11/2015 5:38 PM

I don't see what the Chief did was bad. He is just telling the public that what he saw doesn't look good. If he would have seen the homeless man holding a gun to the cops head he would have said that - called it justified. That wouldn't be throwing the homeless man under the bus. The story goes both ways…. if the citizen is wrong you call it that and if the cop is wrong you SHOULD also call it wrong. Its not tainting the investigation at all either way. Follow the facts. I admire the Chief for his honesty.

Tone @ 5/17/2015 10:11 PM

Mr. or Ms. Diet Soda, as I see it the role Mr. Beck is playing is that of a safe one, but nonetheless a professional open discussion based from his facts and what he has gathered up to this point as evidence not supported by a killing of an unarmed man. I take highly into consideration that the case is still being investigated, so based from what is known at this did the others I commented. As for you who sound just as idiotic..the comments above my own already passed judgment on Mr. Beck.. Whether you agree or disagree is your plight...It is WRONG on every level to kill anyone who poses no justifiable threat of force as death..Clay is exactly right, but this one sided LE gospel has to stop! It is not honorable kill a man who isn't meeting you with the same equal force. In my opinion Chief Beck deserves the gratitude for standing neutral and calling what he sees. And lastly Diet Soda until your standing in my shoes & traveled this road the way i see it Your the true idiot...

DietSoda @ 5/18/2015 8:57 AM

Did I ever say it wasn't wrong to kill anyone who poses no justifiable threat? Did anyone in this thread say anything close to that? Good talk, Tone.

Tone @ 5/18/2015 11:49 PM

At the end of the day, people agree to disagree. We all have our opinion about the issue. I wish I knew why any of us are here in the first place. Police officers being killed. Black men being killed. This evil has to end...Only God knows when this will all end. I'm sad for the families of both sides. And DietSoda, no hard feelings..Good talk to you also. And thanks for the exchange.
