Maryland Governor Declares State of Emergency, Activates National Guard

April 27, 2015  |

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order Monday declaring a state of emergency and activating the National Guard because of violence in Baltimore, reports WBAL-TV.

Police officers were injured, stores were looted, and fires were set Monday evening as vandals ran through Baltimore.

Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk said police are not speculating what the disturbances are related to, but are making sure people in the community and officers are safe.

"I know that the images people are seeing on TV are very disturbing. Our highest priority, our first focus right now is to protect the lives of our officers that are out on the street and the people that live and work in that area," Kowalczyk said.

Kowalczyk said they know officers are in harm's way, and are using tear gas and pepper balls.

"As the night goes on, you're going to see us using tear gas and other crowd control techniques so that we can have this end peacefully without any more injuries to our officers or any of the people that are in that community," Kowalczyk said.

So many mistakes on both sides.

After all Black Mayor, City council members etc. held press conference, heard Black female Mayor state that the police were to let' those who want to destroy things should have the room to do so' (paraphrased) Guess what??!! Rioting started. Since it's on video tape can't actually take it back. Very sad that with all the practice runs we've experienced lately, we still delay to call up guard and mobilize appropriate forces. Investigations take time, and as in Ferguson, sometimes tell a 'different' version of the 'eyewitness' statements. At least this time the white vs. Black nonsense can't be used as a defense since most of upper P.D. posts and mayor/city council heavily minority. Once again destroying their own neighborhoods and as of MN > 15 # cops in hospital with serious injuries. BTW the Black preacher featured in most quotes was former Pres. of Black Panther Party that was as fwew as a couple of years ago calling for the demise of the white race..not a good role model!!
