Michael Brown's Family Files Wrongful-Death Lawsuit

April 23, 2015  |

The parents of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer in August, are suing the city of Ferguson, Mo., for wrongful death, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The suit names as defendants the city of Ferguson, former Police Chief Thomas Jackson, and former police officer Darren Wilson.

In part, the suit contends that Ferguson police officers have a "pattern and practice of using unreasonable and excessive force" against black people. They "often escalate encounters" with blacks when the officers perceive a black person is disobeying orders, the suit contends.

The suit does not seek a specific dollar amount. It seeks punitive damages and compensatory damages, including medical treatment for psychological damages. The suit also wants the circuit court to order the police in Ferguson to stop using patrol techniques that the suite says demean black residents.

The suit also asks the court to appoint a compliance monitor over use-of-force practices in Ferguson for five years or until the city can effectively train its officer on the use of force.

Really? This has been looked at by the PD, the State Prosecutor as well as the Feds (Holder) and all found nothing and now the family of this thug want $ for him being killed while committing several felonies. This should be tossed out of court on the first hearing date. The authorities should not pay one red cent to these Race baiting idiots. Face it, he was a criminal who caused his own death by doing criminal acts. Perhaps if the family had cared more while raising Michael. Brown he might be alive today. You people have a lot of gaol to even think about suing. This says a lot about the entire Brown family.

Darrel Wilson should be filing a suit against MSNBC and CNN for their complicity in stoking the riots and ending his career.

What a surprise! We all knew this was coming it was just a question of when. I bet Sharpton is rubbing his hands together in anticipation. If I were those officers I would seek employment elsewhere. Let the mayor and the governor handle things.

Waited until the last possible minute to file. Serves them right if they Bankrupt the City and they have to let everyone go.

Ryan @ 4/23/2015 11:43 PM

This is what is wrong with the legal system. An officer does his job, defends himself from being over powered and the family gets to file a lawsuit against the officer and the city. Im sure Sharpton ( AKA-con artist) has some part in this also. People need to take a step back and realize Michael Brown made his own choice to be stupid and not respect the law. But it is easier to just put the blame on his actions on the officer for doing his job. Michaels actions are no one elses fault but his own. People like Sharpton and Jesse JaCKSON NEED TO STOP TRYING TO CAPITALIZE ON BAD SITUATIONS FOR THEIR OWN AGENDA.

PROVEN FACT. NORTH AMERICA HAS MORE LAWYERS THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY. THEY DON'T MAKE ANY MONEY UNLESS THEY ARE ABLE TO SUE SOMEONE. REASON WE HAVE SO MANY ATTORNEYS IS BECAUSE IT IS ESTIMATED THAT A NEW LAWSUIT, MAJORITY ARE FRIVIOUS, IS FILED EVERY 90 SECONDS IN THE U.S.
HERE IS THE QUESTION. IF MICHAEL BROWN MANAGED TO GET THE GUN AWAY FROM DARREN WILSON AND SHOOT HIM. WOULD DARREN OR HIS FAMILY GET TO SUE MICHAEL BROWN'S FAMILY PROBABLY NOT.

THE MICHAEL BROWN STORY IS OLD NEWS. PEOPLE NEED TO DO LIKE THE SONG FROM DISNEY'S FROZEN MOVIE. " LET IT GO."

TX Lawman @ 4/24/2015 6:04 AM

Hopefully the judge will throw it out before it gets to trial. Officer Wilson needs to sue the Brown family, Al Sharpton, his former chief, the City of Ferguson and the news media. These entities failed to protect him and caused the loss of his career with their lies, aggression and hatred.

Usually when a civil lawsuit is filed it is to receive compensation for what can be proved as some type of retribution stemming from what is believed or perceived as damages. Let them sue, good for them if they win something! The comments about Michael Brown not being raised. Or if he'd followed the law. Or he had a criminal background? I guess if we ever made a mistake we shouldn't be shot for it huh? It's funny how political or hard hearted we can get when its not a subject touching home. Darren Wilson from one officer to another is an individual who decided the fate of another. He don't deserve commending! Stop speculating! Michael who's bigger than Darren could've wrestled the gun away, but it wasn't the case thank God! If i'm fighting u and i have the advantage, why am i running? And if i'm shot in the back, how again am i a threat? Our society remains broken and will continue to be as long as we have criminals and hateful people carrying out the judgment of another...
