VIDEO: Miami Assistant Police Chief Criticized for Not Pledging Allegiance

The head of the Miami police union is seeking disciplinary action against the assistant police chief after she refused to salute the American flag while in uniform during a promotional ceremony, reports WPLG.

Sgt. Javier Ortiz, president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, wants Assistant Chief Anita Najiy removed from her position as honor guard commander. He sent a letter Monday to Chief Rodolfo Llanes seeking a reprimand.

Ortiz claims that Najiy's failure to salute the flag "to make a political statement" during Friday's ceremony at the Miami Police College is a violation of the police oath. He calls her actions "unprofessional and disgraceful."

The Miami Police Department hasn't commented on whether any action will be taken.

Commander of the honor guard and refuses to salute the flag???????? Bust her back to the last permanent rank she held before making Ass. Chief!!! Disgraceful behavior!

James T. Bryan @ 4/21/2015 2:43 PM

What a disgrace.

Sam Donaldsen @ 4/21/2015 3:00 PM

What a dirtbag! She apparently puts her racist anti-white beliefs ahead of respect for the country and her sworn duty to not only uphold the law but be a good example. Kick her off her undeserved affirmative action-obtained post, and give her the ridicule she earned. Did I mention, "what a dirtbag?"

Tom Ret @ 4/21/2015 3:31 PM

They need to make a political statement and fire her ass or at least demote her. How did someone thinking and acting like this remain in uniform much less be an assistant chief? The lack of respect for this nation and its freedoms by some is stunning especially those in law enforcement.

JJ @ 4/21/2015 3:53 PM

I agree with the Chief.

lowrider @ 4/21/2015 7:02 PM

I have to agree with Sgt. Ortiz. This woman is a member of a much larger organization, if she personally chooses to "make a political statement" then she should quit her job as a cop and run for office. Until that time, the honor guard commander needs to salute the flag.

Another Donut Please @ 4/21/2015 7:22 PM

Remove her from the entire police force...

Greg @ 4/22/2015 4:38 AM

Am I surprised...the poison from Holder/Obama rolls downhill.

HRPufnstuf @ 4/22/2015 5:20 AM

Honor Guard commander? She has no honor! She might as well spit on the flag, and those she is supposedly honoring.

Bobby @ 4/22/2015 6:31 AM

What was her political statement? she is a PO and sworn to uphold the laws and that also means showing respect for our country and the flag, I hope she sees the light.

Bernard Wilson @ 4/22/2015 6:46 AM

Whoa! Lots of jumping to conclusions, assptions and "facts not in evidence!"

If she has any military service, or even from honor guard training, she would reflexively not cover her heart. Notice that she was standing to attention.

Bernard Wilson @ 4/22/2015 6:51 AM

Military practice is to stand at attention and specifically NOT place the hand over the heart during the Pledge. Some PDs actually refer to a specific military manual as being the guiding policy for drill and ceremonies. The probl is that PDs contain a mix of military service vets and people with no military background, which leads to differing interpretations as to what, when and how to salute.

Lesson here - if your LE agency hasn't standardized this, now would be a good opportunity.

Jon Retired LEO @ 4/22/2015 10:44 AM

She is a disgrace to her uniform and this country. This right to free speech thing has gone way too far. I have to agree with the post from Greg.

David Hite @ 4/22/2015 5:55 PM

Have her visit the local VA hospital and talk to some Viet Nam veterans.

Patrcia @ 4/22/2015 6:10 PM

What Honor? She has none refusing to salute the American Flag so many have fought & died for. This was certainly not the time or place for her political statement and she should be removed entirely from the force as she sworn to uphold the laws of the land and she has a duty to be respectful not only to the public but to her oath of office and this includes saluting the American Flag. This is Disgraceful. Take her to a Veterans Hospital... Better yet let her join the military they'll teach her respect..

John @ 4/22/2015 6:32 PM

A rush to judgement isn't the way to go. She may be the only one right! If she is prior military, or perhaps still a reservist, she would instinctively stand at attention, but not salute indoors. The reason is that military take an oath upon entry to service that pledges to their country which the flag stands for. When out of doors, you give a military hand salute to the flag and when hearing the National Anthem.

Tony Bloom, Ret. @ 4/22/2015 8:21 PM

My humble opinion from spending a quarter century as an HG. If she has been on the Honor Guard long enough to be its Commander, then she knows what protocols she should be following. If standing at attention-only is permissible bu the protocols they have set, I see no problem. If that wasn't the protocol and for some reason she made a temporary faux pau, she should be rightly embarrassed-but I can also see allowing an element of Grace (as long as it doesn't happen again!). If, however, she was trying to make some statement by not following protocol-there is no excuse for that and there should be no question at all. She should be immediately removed as Commander, and also removed from the Guard Unit itself. If you choose to be an Honor Guard, then you do what is called of you. If you cannot do that, you are gone.

plato's playdough @ 4/22/2015 10:58 PM

In the above article, an Air Force Veteran takes a US flag away from a group who is stamping on it, whilst it is on the ground. The police attempt to place HER in custody. They DO give the flag back to the demonstrators.

Someone has just moved a chess piece on the board, d'y'think?

Nick Wall @ 4/23/2015 1:21 AM

Well, you can't give her the the benefit of doubt either way. She is not standing at a position of any kind of attention lol. And if she is, I'd like to know whom she learned that from haha. No pride shown here. I don't understand how any LEO could try to defend her actions. I wouldn't call it a disgrace, but her position as the honor guard big wig should be relieved of duty.
Carry On Ladies and Gents.

Larry @ 4/23/2015 8:12 AM

Can we wait to hear her side of the story? The military stance is plausible but WE don't know. Let's not throw another cop under the bus until we have all the facts. Racist? I don't know that either. (I sure hope not). You can't condemn Al Sharpton tactics if you use them too.

Indydep @ 4/23/2015 11:03 AM

Now I am one to believe in duty, honor, and country. I do believe that while in uniform, you should act accordingly, and respect yourself, department and our nations colors. However, after reading some of the comments here, it would very easily to side with her. Especially, if this is what she have to put up with day and day out. There is a time and a place for everything, and again I say not in uniform in that situation. Pick you battles, but remember what got you there.

TBOW426 @ 4/23/2015 12:49 PM

I am a dumb ass with my earlier comment. Thanks to Bernard Wilson for setting me straight. When I saw the caption "Honor Guard Commander Fails to Salute Flag" I automatically assumed there was a formation of officers in "FULL UNIFORM" including hat with the flag passing by. I did not realize it was during the pledge of allegiance. According to the Army study guide, personnel in uniform and "indoors" will not recite the pledge nor salute. They will remain silent and at attention until the pledge is finished. Not sure of she served in the Army, but if she did then she is correct. Going to have to cut some slack on this one and say I was wrong.

Ironwulf @ 4/23/2015 8:02 PM

IF she would just read the 'oath of office' she took to wear that badge, she would know that she MUST SAY the pledge and she MUST HONOR that flag !!!

Lawrence Brown @ 4/24/2015 3:44 AM

What is the agency's standard, military manual require you to come to attention inside with no cover on, not place your hand over your heart. My question would be did she resight the pledge? Reading some of the previous comments from what appear to be other officers, there is a lot of hate black/white, why are you in uniform, by your statements you have issues that obviously affects you in the performance of your duties. There is no place in our law enforcement family for indiviuals like you, we have to be a band of brothers in today society as their views of the police are based on the negative behavior and thoughts of individuals officers such as your self, why don't you quit.

mark @ 4/24/2015 5:13 AM

he needs to be terminated.

Laurie @ 4/25/2015 12:37 PM

How could she swear to uphold the Constitution and then not salute our flag? She's garbage and did not earn her position, from everything I read about her. How does one go from SGT to Asst Chief? Most likely that lawsuit she filed. POS! She should be fired.

Elizabeth @ 4/26/2015 9:15 AM

FIRE HER!! I am sure she could be replaced with someone who is PROUD to honor our country's flag and would GLADLY say the pledge!!! Way too many men and women died for that flag and what it represents for her to TOTALLY disrespect it like that!!! 😠😡😠😡😠😡

Pete O'Mally @ 4/28/2015 10:38 PM

All of this over reacting behavior...Get the facts first! We often have more respect for a flag than loving our neighbors as God instructed. Now if we can achieve that, there's no greater honor in all the earth.
