House Rejects Stop-Gap Funding for Homeland Security

February 27, 2015  |

The House rejected a three-week stop-gap bill to keep the Department of Homeland Security fully operating Friday, a major defeat for Speaker John A. Boehner as a midnight deadline loomed to avoid a shutdown of the massive agency.

In a chaotic scene on the House floor, 51 Republicans rebuffed a major last-minute effort by their leadership to salvage the measure. House leaders kept the roll call vote open for almost an hour, long after the official voting time had expired, as they sought to persuade members to change their votes.

The bill's defeat, 203 to 224, tested the ability of the new Republican-led Congress to avoid a government crisis.

Even the Senate’s willingness to quickly accept the stop-gap plan – and the White House commitment that President Obama would sign it into law – was not enough to win Republicans’ support. Nearly all House Democrats opposed the measure, preferring a Senate-passed measure that would have provided funds for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The next step was unclear. The huge Homeland Security Department is scheduled to run out of legal authority to spend money unless both houses of Congress act by midnight. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) warned members they may need to work through the weekend to try to resolve the problem.

If Congress does not pass a new money bill, some of Homeland Security's more than 200,000 employees would be furloughed, but most would be required to work without pay as they guard the nation's borders and ports and run programs such as immigration, customs and airport security.

"...Nearly all House Democrats opposed the measure, preferring a Senate-passed measure...."

^This says it all- the Dems are at blame for this but the story reads like it's the fault of the Republicans...

I hate to see officers and agents without pay doing dangerous work not knowing if their families are being cared for by their employees. I also hate to see the useless politicians who refuse to allow the Constitution to be followed just because a worthless president decides he wanted to be a dictator.

Believe me, no LEO's will be effected only REMFS clerks and jerks. They will all get a paycheck.

Im sure that this wont be long and as always in the past those that work get paid, intact those that get "furloughed" get the best deal,,,they get paid also in the end, a long vacation. This happened the last few times government "closed", those that are "non essential" are those that are furloughed and if they really are not needed then perhaps we should fire them for good and save the $.

The best legislation we could have would be that no side issues could be attached to any proposed legislation. And the President has done a good job overall considering the mess that was handed him by President Bush.

Who says their working...under Barry's rule of catch & release, "Or Else!" Not to mention the fact, that HE opened the border WIDE open for all to come in and destroy the sovereignty of the nation, like what's going on in Europe with the E.U.

Nothing going here my fellow Americans....keep drinking that Kool-Aid, and keep watching sports / games on T.V. while the liberal progressive democrat communists, keep pissing away our Republic...

I guess you wrote to soon! LATE last night:
Congress OKs 1-week bill to keep Homeland Security open
Not much but it's a start but it gives them another week to get things strait and pass a real bill to keep them open.

What? ^ You're an idiot. You're one of those guys who claims to love the constitution, but only if it fits in with your ideology. If you only knew how bad the DHS violates the constitution... Instead, you'd rather just go against anything the president does because it's the "cool" thing to do. Idiot. Read a book. Or the constitution, for once in your life.

"Hey Sheep and all the rest of the Sheeple out there"...I got one word for you...Baahhh!

Does anyone else remember a time in this nation when Congress passed a budget annually? A time when only a major, unplanned, unforeseeable event would require this sort of special funding effort?

Where are we heading?
