VIDEO: Union Demands Denver Chief Resign After Ordering Officers to Allow Fallen Officer Memorial to be Defaced During Protest

A defaced memorial to fallen Denver, Colo., police officers has led to major backlash that includes the president of the police union, the police chief and a community group said to be responsible for the vandalism.

On Saturday more than 100 people marched down Colfax Avenue from Lincoln Park to the Denver Police Department headquarters located at 1331 Cherokee Street. Some marched in support of Jessie Hernandez, a 17-year-old who was killed when she was shot by police during a criminal incident in January.

During the protest a memorial dedicated to fallen police officers was vandalized with red paint.

The defacement has led to a controversy involving police administrators and the head of the police union. The union is calling for Denver Police Chief Robert White to resign.

Denver firefighters were later seen cleaning the paint off of the memorial, but Denver Police Union President Nick Rogers said the damage had been done.

Rogers spoke exclusively to CBS4’s Lauren DiSpirito following the incident. He said officers monitoring the protest were told by their superiors to not to interfere and to let the vandalism happen. Rogers said he and officers are so upset about that decision that he’s calling for White’s resignation.

Police arrested two men for criminal mischief in relation to the vandalism. They’ve been identified as Matthew Goldberg, 23, and Robert Guerrero, 25. They’ve been charged with criminal mischief-vandalism.

Sad to hear there are not more departments in this country with chiefs like Jane Castor. She would not have allowed that to happen and would be the first in line to stop it

Chicago Cop @ 2/16/2015 12:47 PM

That was outrageous that a law enforcement chief would allow that. What's next? Would he allow that at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery?
There was another video I was sent where ISIS invaded a World War II British Memorial Cemetery in Libya. It showed groups that had defecated on soldiers gravestones then rallied as they smashed and pushed them over.
What is next for them? Will gangs from ISIS or sympathetic now invade the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach or outside Bastogne Belgium and do the same thing.

Will Obama demand these countries or our own embassies increase the security to the point of using force to defend these sacred sites?

This is what happens when the votes of such (fill-in-the blank) are more important that the votes and welfare of their police officers.

I say fire the Chief if he actually gave that order. People have no morals anymore. It's all about what they can get now and no family structure...

John Wilson @ 2/16/2015 1:41 PM

There are some things that need to be stopped despite the risk to officers at a protest in order to keep the protest from getting out of control/ Allowing a public memorial to be vandalized only entices future actions against other memorials in the long run. I am glad the perpetrators were caught, but they should have been stopped before the damage was done.

TC @ 2/16/2015 2:05 PM

The best way to stop this kind of thing, is to never allow it to get started in the first place.

Morning Eagle @ 2/16/2015 2:59 PM

Not only should "chief" white resign, the "superiors" on the scene that ordered no interference should be FIRED or at the very least demoted! They certainly do not deserve the rank they have. Maybe they should even be charged as accessories to this disgusting, inexcusable vandalism. If a weak knee administration like that is allowed to prevail, Denver's troubles will inevitably escalate.

shook @ 2/16/2015 4:11 PM

That spinless man titled as Chief needs to crawl in a dark hole and hide like the coward he is. God bless those fallen Officers and their families. This not only is direct allowed disrespect to the fallen Officers and their families but the currently serving heroes with the department. GOD BLESS YOU ALL..And "CHIEF" KISS MY [email protected]@

Mitch Coopersmith @ 2/16/2015 4:19 PM

The chief should go out and clean up the mess and then resign and return to Indianapolis.

Jon Retired LEO @ 2/16/2015 6:16 PM

This despicable act by a bunch of cowards is absolutely unacceptable. The Peace Officer Memorials are put there to honor all fallen officers from all agencies. This mindset by the leadership reminds me of the Ferguson situation in which the guard was evidently instructed not to engage the protestors. By whom we will probably never know but can make an educated guess. Sheriff David Clarke's words are sounding better all the time.

George Gunn @ 2/16/2015 8:02 PM

Police departments and law enforcement are the first line of defense for the citizens. When they get to paranoid or scared to do their job tyranny has taken over the country and citizens have lost their constitutional rights and their hope to live in peace. What good are laws if you refuse to enforce them. It truly is becoming a sad nation. If you can not do your job, at least show some respect for the people and resign.

plato's playdough @ 2/17/2015 1:56 AM

I really thought about that picture before I placed this comment.

The news article did not describe the manner in which the paint was applied. It would have taken some ladders to get to the top, to achieve the visible result. No helicopters were mentioned, either.

The visual presentation of the vandalism APPEARS IN EVERY WAY to be a threat of violence/retribution/assassination. Allowing this vandalism to occur can be taken as "intent."

Imagine what would have been said if such red paint were placed on the Holocaust Memorial? The message cannot be said to be "unclear."

I hope this was not a false flag operation. If not, then it would be reasonable for the Governor or appropriate Federal entity to conduct an investigation which will positively identify the members of the group responsible and probe for their funding source.

If this does not happen, I suspect a false flag op.

plato's playdough @ 2/17/2015 2:16 AM

Start at 45secons timestamp. This is actually on YouTube.

Hey what would they think if unmarked SUV's started driving around subsequent protests blaring this piece of rap music ??

plato's playdough @ 2/17/2015 2:25 AM

And this one... blast this one during the next protest, and watch what happens.

If they took offense, the response would be "but dey be blastin' deez phat joints ALL dey ALLA time, BEEN doin' it wid no prob-LEM so why it be a prob-LEM now alla sudden?

plato's playdough @ 2/17/2015 2:39 AM

If I were going to direct a movie much like a remake of Fort Apache The Bronx meets Colors, I would open the first scene with the Image of the Painted Memorial with the music of the video referenced. Can you imagine what Sharpton would have to say ??

rgoltry @ 2/17/2015 4:58 AM

What were you thinking Chief, you should resign. As a Chief myself you of all people should know better, you just sent the wrong message to all who want to destroy other property. Your own fallen officer's memorial, SHAME ON YOU....

muvrshaker @ 2/17/2015 12:48 PM

"chief" white is a truly despicable pos that has no business wearing a uniform much less "lead" the brave men and women of the Denver Police Department. He MUST go ...........

Boss Hog @ 2/17/2015 2:44 PM

Is this the same union president that was kicked out of little league coaching?
If the Police Union wants Chief White out then I want him to stay in office. It's the Union that has destroyed the reputation of cops across the nation. The Police Union doesn't protect civilians, they protect bad cops to the end.

Robin Johnson @ 2/18/2015 12:26 AM

Turn in your badge you coward.

XXXXX @ 2/18/2015 4:21 AM

Oh come on give Chief White a break, he is running for U.S. Attorney General when Holder leave. Word is Obama already gave him the wink ;) and a nod.

westcoastleo @ 2/18/2015 1:24 PM

So,,, the Denver Police Chief wont let his officers in his city enforce the vandalism laws in that state? Well,, I bet that if it was a bunch of KKK protesters who were planning on throwing white paint on a MLK memorial, that scared police chief whould have had an army of coppers to stop the action. But since it was a police memorial, he wanted to let it happen and his supervisors let it happen. He and his brass boys below him are cowards and should be thrown out of office.

plato's playdough @ 2/22/2015 2:32 AM

Guess what *I* just found out. I came across a PoliceMag article subsequent to this one, that showed this monument photographed at normal eye level.

That is correct. Ya'see, THIS photograph occurred at ground level. That means the camera was *beneath* the concrete bench viewable on the right of the frame.

**Now WHY would anybody DO that??**

So it DIDNT take a ladder to put the paint on the top of the monument.

See the actual photo...
