A West Michigan police officer was shot Thursday while investigating a domestic assault complaint at a house along Himes Street SE, according to Wyoming (Mich.) Police Chief James Carmody, reports mlive.com.

Officer Frank Hartuniewicz, a 15-year veteran of the Wyoming Police Department, is resting at home Friday, Jan. 30, following his release from Mercy Health Saint Mary's Thursday night, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound.

Hartuniewicz was shot once below his protective vest and above his gun belt while responding as backup to a domestic complaint at 232 Himes St. SE.

The woman exited the home and told officers that the man had loaded firearms in the home. About a half hour after police arrived, the suspect came out a back door and began firing at officers, Carmody said. Hartuniewicz was shot as he stood at the other side of a fence.

The suspect scaled a fence and ran to Abbie Street, while continuing to shoot at random and later again at police. The suspect was shot by officers who returned fire on Abbie Street. He remains hospitalized in critical condition and has not yet been charged.
