December 21, 2014  |

A Tarpon Springs, Fla., police officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning, and a suspect has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Veteran officer Charles "Charlie K" Kondek was shot and killed around 3 a.m. near 199 Grand Boulevard, a few blocks from the city's Sponge Docks. The 45-year-old 18-year veteran of the department was a father of five and former New  York City policeman, BayNews9 reports.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department released the officer's name on its Facebook page around 11:15 a.m., saying "our hearts and prayers go out to the Kondek Family and our deepest sympathy."
