A Navajo Nation police officer died in a car crash Sunday while taking an arrested man to jail, reports CBS.

Officer Ernest Montoya, 54, suffered a heart attack, which caused him to veer off the road. Tribal spokesman Deswood Tome said Montoya had arrested a male suspect and was driving him back to the jail facility on the reservation in Dilkon, Ariz., when the crash happened.

Montoya had been with the Navajo Department of Public Safety for 19 years.
