An off-duty Puerto Rico police officer has been killed by robbers, authorities said Wednesday, reports the Associated Press.

Police said the men approached 36-year-old Edwin Roman Acevedo of the San Juan Police Department outside a pharmacy in the northern town of Trujillo Alto and announced they were holding him up. Police said Roman used his department-issued gun to defend himself.

According to ODMP, despite being shot, Agent Roman-Acevedo was able to maintain control of his weapon and returned fire, wounding one of the men. Unfortunately, the agent was shot three times and died of his wounds. He had served in law enforcement for 10 years and is survived by his wife and one child.
