Alaskan Officer Saves Man with CPR at Airport

Juneau, Alaska, medics say a local police officer used CPR to save an 81-year-old man’s life early Monday at Juneau International Airport.

Juneau Police Department spokesman Lt. David Campbell said in a Monday statement that the officer, Sgt. David Wrightson, responded almost immediately after police were informed the man had collapsed at about 6 a.m. Monday.

“Wrightson was working at the airport and located the male in less than one minute,” Campbell wrote. “The male did not have a pulse and Sgt. Wrightson began performing CPR.”

According to Campbell, JPD officers have been adapting to airport work, since taking over airport security duties from private security guards in October 2013.

“Today’s actually my day off,” Wrightson told KTTU TV. “Eventually there’ll be a dedicated team, but (the airport) has to be covered.”

The man, who is reportedly recovering from heart surgery, was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment. It wasn’t clear whether he had been released as of 11 a.m. Monday.
