A Maury County, Tenn., sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash early Tuesday morning in Spring Hill while responding to help another deputy involved in a pursuit, reports WKRN.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Dep. Darrell Perritt was traveling north on Clara Mathis Road around 3 a.m. when he lost control, left the roadway, and hit a tree on the driver's side. He was killed instantly.

THP spokesman Sgt. Bill Miller said they were in contact with the district attorney and charges could be brought against the female driver involved in the pursuit.

"If the individual was not fleeing, we would not have had this situation this morning," Sgt. Miller said.

Maury County Sheriff Bucky Rowland told News 2 Perritt, 42, leaves behind a wife, a daughter, and two sons. Perritt and his wife were married for 22 years.

Sheriff Rowland said Perritt became a reserve deputy two years ago. He attended the training academy and graduated three months ago to become a full-time deputy. Sheriff Rowland went on to say that Perritt loved his job and had an infectious smile.
