Ferguson Chief Fires Back at Holder, Calls AG's Remarks Irresponsible

October 31, 2014  |

On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called for “wholesale changes” within the Ferguson Police Department, while speaking at a public forum in Washington. He declined to offer any specific recommendations, noting that Ferguson police were still under a U.S. Department of Justice investigation.

Chief Thomas Jackson of the Ferguson PD said of Holder, “I think he’s about to leave office and needs to say he accomplished something in Ferguson.” He said in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Thursday, “Right now, I’m low-hanging fruit.”

Jackson called it “irresponsible” for Holder to comment about conclusions Justice Department investigators analyzing his department have made while their investigation is ongoing, especially while “he is telling others to ‘shut up’ about leaks.”

I support you 100% chief. You stand up for your troops. Hey holder just shut up and leave as quietly as you can

Jon fla @ 10/31/2014 3:31 PM

Hang in there Chief. Don't give to the witch hunt/lynching.

Mitch @ 10/31/2014 8:10 PM

Eric Holder will be in jail while the chief is out bass fishing during is retirement

Richard Koleff @ 11/1/2014 8:22 AM

Thank the Lord that you're a real Cop! Holder is a real slimy political appointee, trying to make believe that he's accomplished something and trying to make his boss look good!

jelly @ 11/1/2014 8:24 AM

Hey Chief keep supporting your troops first and never let crooked politics stand in your way.

notmeofficer @ 11/1/2014 9:19 AM

Stand strong chief... dont let your department and the fine people that serve be cowtowed by a man who is a criminal... holds racist viewpoints.. supported programs that led to the death of a policeman and citizens.. and believes in an agenda that is radical.

Jim Duncan @ 11/1/2014 10:04 AM

Mr Holder just does not understand the facts of life? To actually get into a debate with a well informed police officer is about as dumb as going after a grizzly bear with a willow switch?
It's best to stick with small children & your Washington sycophants Mr Holder. Besides now is not the time to jeopardize your new career with the circus!

TheRookie @ 11/1/2014 12:27 PM

Good for your retort Chief. It's a two-way street in the real world but the DOJ is trying to one-way your department. Keep hanging in there.

"Card Carrying Racist" Erica` von With-Holder @ Dept. of No-Justice needs to clean his own back door steps off before he starts on any others. Stand Tall Chief! Holder is the one in question here. You have done right by protecting your department. This is the third episode where the Obama Administration jumped into the middle racial issue and came up looking like the class dummy.

kevCopAz @ 11/1/2014 4:22 PM

YES, GO Chief! Holder should have resigned years ago with all the non enforcement of voter intimidation, "fast & Furious", all the race baiting political prosecutions, He is a slime ball racist and has the balls to say YOU need to resign, F U. Holder. I sure hope a new president prosecutes you in 2016, no pardon from Obama possible then. You suck Holder.

Leonard Mather @ 11/1/2014 5:35 PM

Holder is behaving according to the current house of cards now called The Administration. Polarization by Jesse and Al fostered by positive reports from the Media all amount to the current fraternity of liberalism promising cradle to grave care, spending money freely, cutting the budget by weakening our military and ignoring the threat of Islamic Fundamentalists by placating CAIR. Notice how Fundamental Islamic Jihadists that are American, and acting alone are NOT called Shaheen (martyrs that go directly to Paradise when they die supporting their Islamic beliefs). Instead of Shaheen, more benevolent terms are used to explain the carnage. "Workplace Violence" was one such term used when more than a dozen US soldiers were killed by the military psychiatrist MD, and officer, Hasan. He is now in prison, allowed to wear a beard and gets special meals that his Muslim religion expects being indulged. Obama said, "The sweetest sound is the call to prayer by the Muezzin."

First off, I cannot stand Holder. He is playing on race and the history of racism to carry out his sick, twisted agenda. Since he's now a lame duck, I feel the media and everyone else, to include his staff, need to just discount and disregard him at all levels completely.

On the other hand, Chief Jackson threw his officers in the grease early on. His public apology to the family was premature, politically motivated, and quite non-supportive of his staff. Further, he failed miserably at adapting his PD and operational standards to modern times. The era of "we are cops" and abuses by police in citing "open/active investigation" in lieu of open communications with the public expired over a decade ago.

Open lines of communication and proper community partnerships by the PD with residents in Ferguson could have mitigated the ensuing rioting and violence. PD's need to adapt to the times and realize they are not above the community, but rather they're part of their community.

Capt. Crunch @ 11/2/2014 11:22 AM

Chief Jackson and Holder are birds of a feather I say good riddance to both of them.

Marshal @ 11/3/2014 5:31 AM

I recently read that the 3rd autopsy stated that there was no possible way the suspect had his hands up and the he was reaching for the officer's gun. What does that idiot Holder want changed? Are we supposed to tell the police to not shoot someone that is attacking them and allow them to beat or kill you? That is about all that wasn't done. If the officer didn't follow his training he would be dead. It wasn't a race motivated thing. It was a survival thing. Must be ok in Holder's eyes for people to attack the police. He obviously is not saying anything about all the police that have been assaulted or killed. If this was race motivated why wasn't the other kid harmed? Why did it take 6 shot. Hmm broken eye socket and jaw, probably can't see very well and only saw a threat coming at him and shot until the threat was stopped. Oh I forgot, the kid was not violent and a good kid. NONE OF THIS IS RACE MOTIVATED. WAKE UP HOLDER AND EVERYONE ELSE.

reglaw @ 11/3/2014 7:52 AM

Just for the record, Marshall, that was what the Post-Dispatch reported that the leaked FIRST autopsy said, based on analysis by a well-known forensic pathologist. But note that that source, Dr. Judy Melinek, has maintained since it was published that the article misrepresents what she said, and that conclusions regarding the various accounts of what happened cannot be settled by the autopsy alone.

And if you check, you will find that the story about the broken eye socket (and now jaw--my how these stories grow!) has been debunked.

I'm not defending what Holder said, but I think we should all be careful about reaching conclusions without all the facts, especially if we are going to take Holder to task for doing so.

reglaw @ 11/3/2014 8:07 AM

FYI, here is Dr. Melinek's comments, from her email with P-D writes, as posted on her blog.

Corrections: here ARE Dr. Melinek's comments and THE P-D WRITER. Sorry.

jingcha @ 11/4/2014 4:32 AM

@capt crunch. I've read ur blogs for a while and respect ur opinion. I agree holder needs to go. He's a disgrace to the epitome of Leo that he's suppose to be. Not saying that ferguson chief is the best they have to do offer but I'm from stl and know both small town and city policing. I think he has a right to lash back, though these sheep won't understand it that way. Stl is a ****hole. I'm proud of all those who serve there. Im grateful I got out. Coulda been me instead of ferguson pd.

This would have been a more attention-grabbing title if it had read:

Ferguson Police Chief Fires Back at Holder with his AR-15, aiming carefully for the "low-hanging fruit."
