Holder Pressures Ferguson PD for "Wholesale Change"

Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that there was a need for “wholesale change” in the Ferguson, Mo., police department, as a range of Missouri officials were privately debating what the future of the department and its leadership should be.

Holder made his comment as this suburb of St. Louis awaited the return of a grand jury that has for months been weighing whether charges should be brought in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer, on Aug. 9. Concerns that the grand jury may bring no charges and thus stir new tumult in this city, where protests have been held nightly, have left many in the region — like school administrators to business owners — bracing for the decision, which could come next month.

Thomas Jackson, the city’s police chief, who has at times been a focal point for protesters’ complaints, said in an interview with the New York Times Wednesday that he had no plans to leave. “I’m the police chief here,” he said, “and I have a job to do and I enjoy my job, and I have the support and confidence of the people that work here and the people I work for.”

But the discussions in recent weeks among the Missouri congressional delegation, the Missouri governor’s office and the St. Louis County Police have included consideration of options for replacing Chief Jackson, according to an official briefed on those talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversations were private.

One option being pondered, the official said, would involve giving St. Louis County the authority to police Ferguson, a majority black community of about 21,000 residents with a police force of 53 officers, most of them white. Dissolving the Ferguson Police Department would require the negotiation of a complex contract between Ferguson city officials and St. Louis County, as well as approval of the City Council, according to the city charter.

Tell him,to go fuck him self and stop playing the race card. And black/ white civil war is brewing and its this kind of crap that's fueling it !

Michael Martinez @ 10/30/2014 2:04 PM

Political BS run amok. We won't wait for the results. We'll assume that a riot means law enforcement did something bad. Maybe they should apply the same standards to Chicago and Washington DC?

Chuck @ 10/30/2014 2:04 PM

Do us all a favor, just shut up and leave as quietly as you can.

MAH @ 10/30/2014 2:06 PM

Holder wants a "wholesale change" because he knows the truth.... Officer Wilson did NOTHING wrong!!! You, Obama, Sharpton and Jackson should go meet with the Brown family at another White House vacation retreat and lick your wounds.... I'm sorry for the loss of life; but the suspect placed himself in his own predicament.

Ed @ 10/30/2014 2:26 PM

I find it interesting that Holder can say anything he wants and condemn Officer Wilson, and feels that this is the proper thing to do. Then when someone tells the truth, he is upset. He should be pleased that someone is wanting to get the truth out, not spread false statements. He needs to do everyone a favor and get out of office now.

Jeremy @ 10/30/2014 2:36 PM

So they want to punish the Chief? For doing nothing wrong? Sounds like a great lawsuit. Holder is a racist apparently. Sounds like racial discrimination against the white chief! This is sadly becoming the norm in this country. White people need their own version of the NAACP!

Norwnj @ 10/30/2014 2:39 PM

Give them hell AG Eric Holder! There are good officers and bad officers. The bad officers need to be replaced with the officers who take their jobs seriously and use the appropriate levels of force when required. The Ferguson police department needs to be purged.

Retired LA Marshal/Sherif @ 10/30/2014 2:45 PM

Norwnj, you need to get your head out of where the sun don't shine.

Chris Murray @ 10/30/2014 2:51 PM

There needs to be a "wholesale change" at DOJ starting with Holder, and the State Officials starting with the Governor, who created the havoc in Ferguson and they need to pay for all of the damages caused by the thugs and looters.

John D. @ 10/30/2014 3:06 PM

It's about time we consolidated the Podunk small town PDs. Tidy up and make professional opportunities that come with a larger regional force. These small town PDs get a lot of nut jobs and misfits that would be weeded out in a larger force. Way too many Podunk forces out there.

Hmmm @ 10/30/2014 3:13 PM

How has the national media skipped reporting that most of the Chiefs at the IACP conference this week boycotted AG Holder's speech because his "security" demanded that the Police Chiefs go to his speech unarmed, even though they had no legal authority to do disarm them and the Chiefs were in uniform?

Norwnj @ 10/30/2014 3:16 PM

@ Retired LA Marshal/Sheriff, it's amazing when an LA representative makes a comment which runs counter to supporting good officers. LA has a long history of being incompetent and corrupt. Bad LA officers should have been purged years ago.

Marshal @ 10/30/2014 3:23 PM

If we care as a community, of the only thing standing between chaos in the streets and a safer normal world, then all of us need to VOTE next Tuesday to get rid of the progressive hyper liberal Senators that carry water for this anti-American ideology. The Dems gave us Holder who generally despises local LEO's. Example: Maricopa Country sheriff Joe Arpaio. Holder and his DOJ powers acted outside the law when he himself contacted , in 2012, the Arizona district court to reject Arpaio's request to dismiss the lawsuit against him. Holder doesn't respect the separation between the Judicial branch and the Executive branch. Ever hear Holder speak up on the illegals that are shooting police ? Nope..not a word.

Chuck @ 10/30/2014 3:25 PM

Lennys back. Hey Leonard fuck off

Marshal @ 10/30/2014 3:28 PM

To the above excellent Hmmm comment on the IACP and Holder.
Please share your info with NPR news..see how far they will listen...my guess is this far at best_ "crickets chirping- silence"

xxxxxx @ 10/30/2014 3:59 PM

I finally figured out who Lenny is on these blogs. It's Holder's UC name. That explains everything.

Tom Ret @ 10/30/2014 4:02 PM

Officers in Ferguson and throughout the country need to give Holder the collective middle finger. He is an absolute disgrace. He is the one who has instituted DOJ's racist policies and has led the most corrupt DOJ in living memory. I'm hoping that the facts will eventually be revealed in the Fast N Furious and other scandals that will put his butt in prison.

Boston @ 10/30/2014 4:13 PM

It's pretty bad when the top of the Justice System can't look at the case and disregard race. If Brown was white and the LEO was black. What would national news be reporting? Just think this crap all started in Cambridge, MA with a Professor and the Cambridge PD. The present Administration should be paying attention to International Affairs, employment, 40% Corporate taxes and the economy. Can't wait to vote this Tuesday. Get out and vote people!

kevCopAz @ 10/30/2014 5:00 PM

I just pray that the 2016 presidential elections give us a republican so that they can investigate all of Holder's crimes, That way he can NOT be pardoned by Obama and you know Obama would if any incitements comes before then. In one respect Holder was great in pointing out the liberal, race baiting politically correct BS that has FU--ed up our nation. Perhaps he is a blessing in disguise. He should shut his mouth and do his job fairly, but frankly I think he is incapable.

kevCopAz @ 10/30/2014 5:06 PM

so let me get this straight, an option is to dissolve the PD??? EVEN IF Ofc. Wilson did do something wrong, which I feel he did not, why would you put 54 other hard working cops out of work?? Thats a bunch of BS. When DOJ and the ATF screwed up Fast & Furious did ANYONE lose their job??? NO, That would be like firing all the ATF agents just because of that few agents screwing up. Typical hypocritical Federal Lib BS. Bastard!

Steve Rothstein @ 10/30/2014 7:05 PM

I find it very interesting that Holder makes comments condemning the leaks of the grand jury investigation and then makes comments saying the Ferguson PD needs wholesale change while the investigations are still secret and incomplete. Or has the FBI completed their investigation of the original incident? If so, why has Holder not released it yet?

The Dept. of Justice needs wholesale change in its leadership, and fortunately it is coming. I just hope it is a better leader than the current one, though I don't have any faith that it will be.

Capt. Crunch @ 10/30/2014 7:56 PM

I would tell this racist POS Holder, to show the facts for his decision on Ferguson. I thought this POS was leaving I guess his boss can't find another black racist POS to take his job.

TheRookie @ 10/30/2014 8:33 PM

We've got to consider the source. "Black Panthers Card Carrying" Erica` von With-Holder @ Dept. of No-Justice, Al "Cocaine Snorting C.I.7" Shark-ton, Barry "Benito Millhouse" Soetoro-Obama, & Cronies are anti-American anti-Police hating thugs. Holder's ex-colleagues say he "literally has a card" he carries in his wallet since college. All of the DOJ Asst. U.S. Attorneys who work directly for him were hand picked & required to be racist. They're all scabs who should be sitting in prison. He can't leave this position quick enough. Myself I hope he gets in a fatal vehicle wreck or his plane crashes.
John D., Stop talking stupidity again. 12,501 Police Depts., 3063 Sheriff's Offices, 1733 Special Jurisdiction Agencies, & 638 other L.E.A's. totaling 17,935 within the U.S. 11,863 of them have 0 to 100 L.E.O's. Your spewed mouth diarrhea shows that you don't know shat when it comes to civilian Law Enforcement. SSTFU...!!!

AH2BACop @ 10/31/2014 4:56 AM

Holder... A nightmare or a really bad joke. Wouldn't have expected anything less from the BO admin. Consider the source. They were anti-cop from the get-go. Can't see them out of office soon enough.

cop1 @ 10/31/2014 5:19 AM

It looks like America is really being policed by majority of insensitive bigots who think everyone who is not white should be shot on site for them most simple things they would not want their own sons or daughters to be shot for. Holder is right. The Ferguson police chief is an embarrassment to professional policing. Most of you cowards positing on this site are as well.

TX Lawman @ 10/31/2014 6:20 AM

Norwnj: The officer used the appropriate use of force from all the evidence I've seen and it appears that the Grand Jury agrees from the information that was leaked, but I have not seen all of the evidence. When someone a lot bigger than you is beating you, it's time to use deadly force. End of story! and as far as Eric Holder is concerned...he is a racist and a criminal and needs to be in prison with the rest of the thugs! He continually violates the Constitution of America.

TX Lawman @ 10/31/2014 6:31 AM

cop1: Do not use the word cop for your title when you are not PD. It's an embarassment to the Blue. But your statement about removing the chief may be good. They need a tougher chief their that would have arrested all the violent protesters when they rioted, burned and shot at police. They should have been handled like all other gangs. Peaceful protests are acceptable; riots are not!

Tom Ret @ 10/31/2014 8:19 AM

Cop1- If you are a cop, which I highly doubt, you are a racist, black thug apologist. It is more likely you work for Holder in the corrupt DOJ.

steve @ 10/31/2014 8:21 AM

Norwnj, on the issue of replacing corrupt cops (and I agree there is nothing worse than a dirty cop) is that it's getting harder and harder to find GOOD quality recruits for the salary they'll be making. And you can blame the educational system in this country for that. Not a lot of really intelligent people want to get into a dangerous and thankless career like law enforcement. Yes, I know it's been that way for as long as law enforcement has been around, but now it's getting to where mobs dictate the outcome of incidents like Ferguson and our judicial system is becoming weaker and weaker...no backbone what so ever for fear of violating some CRIMINAL's rights. What about good people's rights...who's looking after them? It sure isn't the courts!
The greatest conflict of interest ever in the history of this planet is that LAWYERS ARE ALLOWED TO BE LAW MAKERS!!! It may have started out being a good idea but it no longer works! Don't look for things to get better anytime soon.

SpecialAgent007 @ 10/31/2014 8:34 AM

Eric Holder you are a racist. The burden of proof "Eric" is on you. You say the Ferguson Police Department needs "wholesale change". Why do you say that "Eric"? Because of the race of the officers??? How about proving that qualified black candidates were passed up for less qualified white candidates? Can you do that "Eric"??? Unless you can prove that racial animus was used in the hiring process then STFU. I can tell you that far less black candidates show up to test for police jobs than white candidates. Should the department hire all the black candidates before the white candidates solely based on race?? That sounds racist "Eric". Every man is equal, and hiring decisions are made based on qualifications not race. So "Eric" either you "prove your point beyond a reasonable doubt" or STFU.

Capt. Crunch @ 10/31/2014 8:46 AM

@ TX LAWMAN, you are right on I agree with you 100%.

Walter @ 10/31/2014 9:31 AM

The U.S. DOJ needs wholesale change.

ssc1911 @ 11/2/2014 6:57 AM

Holder is a racist and always has been. He is a left over from Slick Willie's administration. He wasn't any better than either. He has made the DOJ a mockery and used it to be selective in enforcing what laws they think need to be enforced.
From reading many blogs and news articles, the deceased Micheal Brown was no angel he was a thug and the store video shows that in him shoving a small man in the store. Yet the family of the deceased and others want the white officer who shot Brown, while defending himself from Brown prior to Brown becoming expired. The DOJ and its Civil Rights Division have the most radical left lawyers in that division clean house there too. The comment from Steve on 10/31 about getting lawyers out of politics is very true it need to be done, as it is a conflict of interest from them as by being attorneys they are officers of the court. Holder should have been prosecuted early on as he is responsible for many things that have gone wrong.

marshal @ 11/3/2014 5:41 AM

Maybe the police need to just quit responding to riots and robberies and just take the reports after the fact until the government and the public decide to support the police again. Screw all these liberal a**holes that have had it so good and sit there and judge from their cush homes. I wish the whole country would have blue flu at the same time. They don't want the police to use their guns or do their jobs then let's sit back and watch like they do. See how long they can take that.
