St. Louis Officer Under Investigation for Calls to Activist's Employer

October 16, 2014  |

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs is investigating an officer who reportedly called a woman's employer to discuss her involvement in Ferguson protests.

Leigh Maibes recorded a phone conversation with Officer Keith Novara on a YouTube video in which she questions why he called her boss regarding her involvement and Twitter posts about police tactics used during protests.

Novara responds that he was giving the broker a "heads up" because he is a south St. Louis business owner, and communicating with them is part of his responsibilities as a South Patrol officer. Novara can then be heard saying that he was warning Maibes' boss that the phones at the business might be "blowing up," from people upset about Maibes' tweets.

Maibes says in the video that beside Novara, her boss only received one phone call from a woman that complained.

The St. Louis Police Officers Association released a statement in response to allegations that Novara tried to "intimidate a local activist," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The union's business manager Jeff Roorda said it has hired an attorney specializing in First Amendment rights to represent Novara.

My guess this "victim" is black. SHE can complain all she wants to a Cops boss but a cop can never complain to her boss? This in itself is wrong and bet the cop is white, the "offended party" is black, surely race was not an issue in this? Thats area of the country is insane. When are folks going to get it in their head that these protests are nothing more then thugs taking the chance to steal and loot and the race baiters opportunity to make more $ for themselves. These types of folks (mentioned above) will protest anything to gain advantage. They will find any reason to feel "oppressed" or "discriminated" what a joke. How about we remove all those "evil, Racist" cops from all the neighborhoods who are so "in danger" from the PD and let them police themselves? Watch those areas burn by the same people doing this crap now. Perhaps we need to go back to the (racist times) policices of the past, only allow minority cops to police minority areas ? Would this work for those folks

@kev, who is saying they don't want cops. Stay focused. People don't want cops to shoot them and DON'T think it's right for a cop to phone your boss to say you're an activist when you haven't broken any laws. Is a cop allowed to do ANYTHING just because they are needed by society?

truth @ 10/16/2014 7:14 PM

Actually she is white so you both look like a couple of bigots. way to go!

ftrnr @ 10/17/2014 3:54 AM

"truth" how does robin look like a bigot? If I read correctly, that person is on your side. Read the words before you run your mouth.

On the other hand, if she can say whatever she wants to whomever she pleases, it seems he can as well. Probably not the smartest move ever, but I don't see it being a problem.

Good point Robin! But I'd also like to know if this ACTIVIST had already told her boss that she was an activist. If so, then what's the problem with the LE officer calling her boss. If NOT, why not? Is the boss/company racist? If so, has she complained to anyone about that? I think my point is that these ACTIVISTS seem to "pick and choose" their complaints without any consistency, which in turn causes them, at times, to look like a bunch of racists themselves!

Concerned Citizen @ 10/17/2014 3:31 PM

We've really lowered the bar to what we call "Activists". This lady is a Street Agitator from the Saul Alinsky Rules for Radicals play book. The LEO might have skirt the law, a little and in this day and age people don't want a "Police State". The problem is he gave the lady what she wanted and Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right, the STREET AGITATORS use "Might Makes Right" and Two Wrongs Make It Right. A REAL ACTIVIST IS CIVIL! I used to be an Advocate for Disabled People. People with Autism, and Downs Syndrome etc. Not one did I make threats against LEOs. Infact I tried to write laws to help disabled people in Schools so their parents could choose school districts they want! "Special Needs School Vouchers" etc. For the PC mind-set!
The HARD LEFT wants civil liberties taken away! The best way to start is to make war with Citizens! These Agitators don't speak for everyone. The LEO might have made a mistake. But a bigger mistake is Marshal Law for Everyone! The Agitators are THUGS!

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Preach on brother/sister! Bravo!
