A Midland County (Texas) Sheriff's deputy suffered a fatal gunshot wound Thursday while serving a warrant at a suspected child predator's home in northwest Midland, reports the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

Sheriff's deputies — including slain Sgt. Mike Naylor — arrived in the 3800 block of North County Road 1247 just before 2 p.m. to serve a warrant to alleged sex offender Dan William Higgins, 37, who is accused of shooting Naylor in the head while being served.

Higgins then barricaded himself in his home for more than three hours. He surrendered without incident.

Naylor was airlifted to Midland Memorial Hospital but died that afternoon.

Just call in airstrikes.

Sgt. Naylor,
My family will say our prayers for you, your family and your department. God bless you and thank you for keeping us safe. Without people like you, our world would have been a very different place. You are much different than our military soldiers who fight bravely at times when they are called to action, no, you fought the fight every day and for that we are eternally grateful to you and your kind.

AZBIGDOG @ 10/11/2014 8:30 AM

My condolences to the family and friends and the members of the Midland County Sheriff's Office. May your sorrow be consolable and your grief comforted by the life the Sgt. has lived.

I wonder if a representative from the White House will be at the funeral like there was for Michael Brown? I wonder if any government officials will get on national television to talk about this? Rhetorical question!!! Of course not.

Rest in peace. Thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice while upholding the law so many take for granted.

Richard Mullane @ 10/11/2014 5:05 PM

This man made the ultimate sacrifice for his job, he was shot while protecting the public he was sworn to protect. You don't see people rioting in the streets or burning the American flag do you ??? No, and that's just disgusting. !! But it's because he's white. That may offend some people and that's just to bad ! I for one am tired of trying to be politically correct. Anyway, God Bless you Deputy !

Reagan Co. CVE Deputy 811 @ 10/12/2014 6:24 AM

God bless you Mike. I knew you as a fellow deputy and also as your Texas Air Guard commander. You never failed me. JJ

Terry @ 10/12/2014 1:39 PM

Rest in peace Sgt Naylor. Texas has the death penalty. Take him out and hang him in a square where the other CM's can see what happens when you kill a LEO and molest little children. Either that or put him in with Bubba.

TheRookie @ 10/12/2014 11:56 PM

R.I.P. Deputy Sgt. Naylor & may your direct & L.E Families find some comfort in the coming days.
To many. Way to many this & every year.

Brad Miller @ 10/14/2014 6:44 AM

Mike Naylor was a very good officer serving the community as a Mental Health Deputy and positive role model for all who came in contact with him. He will be missed but not forgotten.
My condolences to the family and all the brother officers that knew and worked with him.
