VIDEO:Off-Duty St. Louis Officer Kills Man in Gunfight, Triggering Angry Protests

An off-duty St. Louis police officer shot and killed a young African-American man Wednesday night in south St. Louis, triggering hours of protests. Police say the man fired on the off-duty officer. The officer was not hit.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the officer was working a secondary job for a private security company at the time of the shooting.

Relatives of the suspect who came to the scene said the victim had been unarmed. They identified him as Vonderrit Myers Jr., 18.

Teyonna Myers, 23, of Florissant, said Myers was her cousin. "He was unarmed," she said. 'He had a sandwich in his hand, and they thought it was a gun. It's like Michael Brown all over again."

Dotson said the officer had been in a car when he saw three males in the 4100 block of Shaw Boulevard at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. One of the males started to run away but stopped. The officer did a U-turn and then all three ran. The officer drove through streets following them, and then he got out and chased them on foot.

Assistant Police Chief Alfred Adkins said the teen the officer was chasing jumped from some bushes and struggled with the officer.

The man had a gun and fired at least three shots at the officer, who returned fire, the chief said. The man attempted to fire more but his gun jammed, Dotson said. Police said they recovered a 9mm Ruger.

The officer fired 17 times, he said. It is unclear how many times the teenager was struck.

I am truly not trying to a wise acre here, but are we supposed to walk around with hunters orange vests that have a bulls eye so we can be shot at everyday? I know I swore an oath, but when anyone is shot at, the normal reaction is to shoot back! If the government of Missouri takes up on the side of the ARMED man with a GUN, who shot at a cop, then if I were law enforcement in that state, I would go elsewhere for a job. This political correctness business has gone way too far. I am so sick of everyone in politics not wanting to hurt someone's feelings, that they end up kissing you know what. Do your job, take a stand. Do not be afraid to say NO!!! If has to start somewhere, as well as end somewhere. If the politicians would stay out of law enforcement, than the cops, who know what their job is, and the bad guys, who know what their jobs are, would all get the job done. Anyone who commits a crime, knows the consequences. The politicians should know what their are too.

Can't you just hear the excuses from Venderitt about Teyanna...."He a good boy, going straight, a good "baby daddy", he was gonna' be a preacher/rap singer/artist etc. etc. etc."....followed by "Why didn't he shoot to wound the boy? Becuz he's black, they always kill the black boys...and he only shot 3 times, the officer knew he didn't mean to hit him, just want to scare him".

Just amazing, an instant victim crowd with the required T-shirts about being a black victim also etc. etc. etc.

I feel for the officers today who are subjected to this mob mentality and abuse. It appears that certain segments of our society will always feel that they are victims even when the facts say otherwise. It is a tough time to be a cop
in a lot of these neighborhoods.

Capt. Crunch @ 10/9/2014 10:48 AM

When our these modern day police departments going to stop pussy footing around and start fighting fire with fire. When these stupid evil people create a mob, they need to feel physical pain while they are doing their dirty deeds.

tirecop @ 10/9/2014 11:51 AM

Yeah every time a black is shot by a white officer they are gonna say crap like this. I think it's funny every time a black shoots a white officer it isn't publicized as much and the whites don't riot and destroy property !

James @ 10/9/2014 12:41 PM

Working surveillance one gets to hear things most people don't it isn't always the assumption I am a victim, it is "I will play this game to get what I want". It is racial bipolarism. Just like the debated Bipolar it is bad behavior given an excuse. " If I throw a fit and scream loud enough some fools will come to my aid and make sure I get my way" is the thought process.

Fact seems to indicate the dead man was shooting at a person he didn't know could shoot back and found out the hard way.. Suck to be as stupid as he WAS.

Pup @ 10/9/2014 3:38 PM

I may have missed it. It said police killed a black teen. Did it say it was a white cop? Another thing, I feel sorry for our brothers/sisters who are African-American, as they are caught in the middle. They stand to keep the law and yet, they take crap from their own people and hear from others who wonder why blacks think white cops are racist. I hope our LE brothers & sisters continue to stand together as LEO. We need you.
If it was possible, it would be awesome for all of our LEO's to leave St. Louis area and find jobs elsewhere, leaving the people without LE. This way the people can handle their own problems and have nobody to blame but themselves. Be safe brothers & sisters of LE.

What in the world is the matter with people today. A black male who I am sure was told to stop. Ran from the officer not once but twice and then attacked the officer and shot at him. One time two times three times, once is too many. I would have tear gassed that mob rounded them up and stood them in a group to see the weapon that this gentlemen had used to shoot at the officer and then take the fingerprints off of it and display them for all to see. Just maybe then these fools will get the idea.

It is amazing how someone that wasn't even at the scene of the incident can make a statement to what had occurred and the press quotes it. The quote "It's like Michael Brown all over again" is correct. Brown was a criminal which was proven by the video recorded in the store just prior to the shooting. Brown was shot after allegedly attacking the officer. So in that respect, the cousin was most likely correct. Her cousin was probable involved in something he shouldn't have been, that is why he ran and he got shot after attacking the officer. Sad the press is only interested in rating and not in the truth when they report a story. Another riot would be good press.

Will other law enforcement agencies please take out ads in St Louis media advertising lateral job postings. Grant St Louis Officers refugee status.

Here are two articles that provide backstory and insight.

http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2014/10/09/the-sandwich-shooter-vonderrit-myers-jr-was-shot-5-to-7-times-from-the-front/

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2786043/High-school-student-dead-shot-16-times-duty-police-officer-St-Louis-10-miles-Michael-Brown-killed.html

I must wonder, that if a relative of the deceased insists that the 18yr old adult had only a sandwich in his hand, they are saying that THEY WERE THERE. I wonder if that can be corroborated, and have not seen that detail included in the stories.

The above articles reference a previous encounter with LE where he ran and ditched a .38. One of the articles has a view of the complaint.

STATE OF MISSOURI VS MYERS, VONDERRIT DEONDRAY DIV #: CA#: 510661857 the defendant knowingly carried concealed upon or about his person a Hi-Point 380 semi-automatic pistol, a firearm, which weapon was readily capable of lethal use.

Bill @ 10/10/2014 7:27 AM

Slug for thugs. At least this officer wasn't injured, which can't be said for Darren Wilson. Both of these men should be given a medal.

John Wilson @ 10/14/2014 9:06 AM

This news is getting old! African Americans are starting to act like Muslims now. They are offended by any law enforcement, especially if it has a white man in the uniform. Enough is enough, you have to be accountable for your actions and the actions of your community when the law is broken.
You have to support your police and cut down the ugly incidents, by cooperating instead of making your own interpretation of the law and wanting to resist the officers. Wake up, get educated and apply your education responsibly.
