A San Bernardino (Calif.) PD officer shot in the head this morning near 19th Street and Garner Avenue remains in grave condition after undergoing surgery, police said this morning, reports the San Bernardino Sun.

Police identified the officer as 31-year-old Gabriel Garcia. His father, Capt. Ron Garcia, is operations director for the department and a life-long veteran of SBPD.

Garcia is divorced and has one child.

Police said one suspect is dead, and five suspects have been detained in connection with the shooting.

The dead gunman was identified as Alex Alvarado, 38, of San Bernardino. Police said Alvarado is a long-time member of a criminal street gang based in Redlands.

Police said Garcia was shot once in the head and twice in the upper body with an assault rifle during a protracted gun battle. His trainee, who shot and killed the suspect, was not wounded and has not been identified.

TERRY F. ZECH VAPD (RET) @ 8/23/2014 8:32 AM

My sincere prayers for officer Garcia and his family and department. Thanks to the officer who took out the suspect as he tries to hurt more officers and civilians. One that we don't have to prosecute and clothe and feed and house for the rest of his life. All suspects who kill police officers need to be executed.

Jeff Allen @ 8/23/2014 8:34 AM

Prayers to Officer Garcia and his family. Kudos to the trainee who unfortunately so early in his career had to take a life, and now has that to live with forever. It's time we treated these gangs as what they are and shut them down with the full force of the law, and the support of every level of the legal community. This type of behavior against law enforcement is no place in this great country. Stay safe.

Thanks brother. I miss you terribly

Prayers going out to Ofc Garcia and family

TheRookie @ 8/23/2014 1:43 PM

Prayers & Wishes go to Garcia Family. S.B.P.D. has command staff that has an average of 20 + years with the agency. They know their city. L.E.O's. keep your cool out there & take no names if that's what it takes to go home alive. Officer Darren Wilson has over $240,000.00 donated for his defense fund so far. Looking to get $750,000.00 to $1 million. Won't see thugs get that kind of BROTHERLY love from the likes of End the Blue Regime.

End the Blue Regime: Pretty tuff on the keyboard there aren't you junior? You're no different than HAMAS, Al Qaeda, or ISIS. You hide behind a computer or a mask on your face. A COWARD is what you people are. Straight up Yellow Belly.

F Delano @ 8/23/2014 3:09 PM

God has a special place for Officer Garcia. Sorry for your loss Garcia Family. We need to take back this country. All of the honest citizens need to start a nationwide organization to kill thugs . I know it's hard to do but thugs who kill police should not make it to booking. The bible says an eye for an eye but we don't want to hear that. If the bible is the true word of Gog, an eye for an eye means just that. Let's get fed up and destroy evil in this world. What would this world be like if we did not have police? I don't want to know. I hope the other suspects get death, immediately, not in 15 or 20 years. After one lost appeal, execute it 24 hrs. That's Justice.

Kudos to all the good responses, save one. That said, what exactly is an "Assault Rifle"? One of those fast repeating lever action rifles, or perhaps a pump or the new and improved bolt or T bolt rifles? Or is it black or blued or brushed stainless? Some of us readers are appallled by the term, "Assault Rifle". All the a fore mentioned are quite deadly, aren't they?

Nightstalker @ 8/23/2014 8:28 PM

Hey End the Blue Regime i think you are a red diaper doper baby as I HATE COP KILLERS AND THE LIKES OF YOU and Thugs that go around doing 211's that likes to beat up white cops should be hung in public!!!!!!!!!!!!

tedb @ 8/25/2014 7:42 AM

End the Blue Regime??? Either I missed something or that post has already been removed. Was this another "Lenny" type comment?

Larry Romero @ 8/25/2014 3:31 PM

God bless you Officer Gabriel Garcia. Prayers for you, your dad, and your Department.
