VIDEO: Highway Patrol Brings Relative Calm to Ferguson, Mo.

In Ferguson, Mo., yesterday, a stunning change in tone radiated through the suburban streets where protests had turned violent each of the last four evenings following the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, reports the Washington Post.

But Thursday night, when more than a thousand protesters descended on the remains of QuickTrip – which was burned during riots on Sunday – they had a new leader.

The man at the front of the march was Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ronald S. Johnson, a Ferguson native.

Johnson, a towering African American man who wiped sweat from his brow as he pointed out neighborhood hangouts and restaurants he used to frequent, was put in charge of crowd control earlier in the day, replacing the St. Louis County police who had been overseeing the police response to the protests.

Not only did Johnson march with the protesters, but he vowed to not blockade the street, to set up a media staging center, and to ensure that residents’ rights to assemble and protest were not infringed upon. Officers working crowd control, he said, have been told they must take off their gas masks.

Apparently the calm that the Highway Patrol Capt was seeking did not hold as the
store robbed by Brown was looted and damaged and possibly other businesses nearby according to Johnson. Johnson ordered the police to avoid confrontation with the looters-rioters to avoid the officers being hurt or looters and no arrests were made.

What happened to the rights of the store owners that just had their stores ransacked while the police stood by and did nothing? If the police can't act
because of fear for their safety or the suspects why send the police on any call?

An impotent police response to the mob may lead to anarchy and citizens taking the law into their own hands.

Capt. Crunch @ 8/16/2014 10:30 AM

Everything is more peaceful now because these militant blacks got their free TV's and alcohol beverages. Al Sharpton, should be arrested for inciting a riot.

Deputy Ken @ 8/16/2014 10:56 AM

This whole situation is a cluster..... None of the media have all the facts and yet they rush to side with the fleeing robbery suspect who tried to take an officer's gun. Instead of the headline being, " Fleeing robbery suspect shot after confrontation with police" the completely skewed headline of " Unarmed teen slain by police." Last time I checked, an 18 year old was a legal adult, the media needs to stop trying to make him sound like an inocent kid, because he wasnt. Then all the sudden the usual race baiter idiots like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson show up with the New Black Panthers (A racist criminal organization) and start making things into what they are. The Panthers and Sharpton should all be arrested for inciting riots.

This is just another example of peope playing up the race card. Even if after the investigation the shooting turned out not to be justified, the justice system has a process by which that would be handled idiot criminalshave no right to riot and loot.

William Jefferson @ 8/16/2014 6:52 PM

Ponder this: How long would the riots and looting have gone on, if the authorities had put rounds or buck into the first half dozen looters? The non-action by authorities sends the message that looters will be successful, and encourages further and future riots and looting.

Pulling back & thus leaving was, 'Letting the Inmates Run the Asylum.' It didn't hold, today the people way laid Capt. Johnson as a sell out, & curfew now set.
Black groups say it's on like Donkey Kong tonight. Katy Bar the Doors.

Concerned Citizen @ 8/16/2014 8:43 PM

The Reason we have the Second Amendment is to secure our homes & property from Looters etc. Not to mention Tyrannical Govenment(s) like Mao's great Socialist China etc. And "The Powers That Be..."
It's sad the LEOs stood down, but what choice do they have? Let looters get away with crimes? Or go Full Martial Law? Where the Gov. owns you as a SLAVE?! If Vigilantes form groups to protect themselves will they be arrested as Domestic Terrorists? Because what choice does a Law Abiding Citizen have? The Borders are open, nobody at the Federal Level cares about the Middle Class. You should JOIN CITIZENS instead assuming they are enemies of the state! We The People is the Government! Not the Puppets in DC, or the Bureaucrats who have large egos and have big power trips!

Steve @ 8/17/2014 8:18 AM

Why didn't the State Police stop the looters?

Don @ 8/17/2014 2:15 PM

This Capt Ferguson is disgrace to the uniform he wears. He has never once mention in any interview for justice for the officer involved. In fact he talks about the legacy Michael Moore will leave. Don't forget Moore committed a strong armed robbery and assaulted the officer. Where is the justice??????????? What a shame!

local police officer @ 8/18/2014 5:27 AM

Reading the messages left on boards like this from boneheaded jerks throughout this country verifies that we have a serious problem in this country with who are wearing badges and serving as police officers. The good news is, unless you are the police chief in Ferguson, you are probably investing your time more wisely and therefore progressing in your careers beyond line level racist idiots that troll these sites justifying everything, regardless of how wrong or bad it is police officers do. And by the way. Captain Johnson is doing something you punks could never do; effectively lead and calm a community in times of a crisis.

Mitch Cooper @ 8/18/2014 12:38 PM

it seems "local police officer" has no common sense. As his hero was just kicked to the side and the NG were brought in. This was a media induced riot. Shoot the looters and fire the officers with no common sense.
