Video: Police Shooting of Missouri Teen Sparks Protests, Rioting, and FBI Investigation

VIDEO: Tension High in Mo. Town After Teen Shot by Police

A Saturday afternoon officer-involved shooting that killed a reportedly unarmed teenager rocked the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo., this weekend triggering angry confrontations between crowds and police, protest vigils, and the looting and burning of businesses.

Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed Saturday afternoon. Accounts of what led to the deadly force incident vary. Area residents say the African-American teen did nothing to instigate the shooting.

The St. Louis County Police have been asked to investigate the incident by the Ferguson PD chief. County Police Chief Jon Belmar told KMOV that Brown was unarmed and walking with a friend in the middle of the street when an officer attempted to exit his vehicle. Police say Brown or the friend pushed the officer back into the police car. According to police, a struggle ensued over the officer’s weapon. Police said during the physical altercation a shot was fired inside of the car.

Witnesses say Brown was fleeing from the officer with his hands in the air when he was shot multiple times. Police report Brown was 35 feet from the officer when the shots were fired and the only casings found at the scene were from the officer's gun.

Brown's mother, Lesley McSpadden, said he had graduated from high school and was about to enter a local college. She said she doesn't understand why police didn't subdue her son with a club or TASER, and she said the officer involved should be fired and prosecuted, Fox News reports.

The officer involved in the incident has not been identified. The officer's race has also not been disclosed. Ferguson PD cars do not have video, nor do the officers wear body-worn cameras, although the city recently purchased them. Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson told KSDK-TV there's also no apparent video footage of the shooting from the nearby apartment complex.

The shooting sparked an immediate reaction from area residents. Officers responding to the incident were met by an angry crowd screaming obscenities and yelling "Kill the police!" the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Unrest continued through the night, as police kept an uneasy peace.

Sunday night after a candlelight vigil, which drew people from all over the St. Louis area, some protesters took to the streets of Ferguson looting and burning businesses and confronting officers. People were seen carrying bags of food and toilet paper. TV footage showed streams of people walking out of a liquor store carrying bottles of alcohol, and in some cases protesters were standing atop police cars or taunting officers who stood stoic, often in riot gear.

More than 30 people were arrested on charges including assault, burglary, and theft. Police say two officers suffered minor injuries, according to a Fox News report. Some 20 police vehicles were damaged.

Ferguson, St. Louis Metro, St. Louis County, and Missouri State Highway Patrol officers were called in to quell the rioting and restore peace.

Today, it was announced that the FBI has opened a parallel investigation of the shooting that will coincide with the St. Louis County Police investigation.

Sigh...same old crap. Waiting for the, "He's a good boy, got 3 children he's a baby-daddy for, getting his life on track, wants to be a rock star, why didn't he just shoot to wound...etc. etc. etc." All of this then followed by burning and looting to show displeasure.

News station, Unarmed black male adult shot by police. Nothing like Black male attempts to take officers gun and is shot. Next time the officer needs to just let the punks walk down the middle of the street so they get run over, then no problem. Oh unless it's a white driver that hits them. They can kill each other daily and its no big deal, but as soon as a white person is in the mix, they did it because he was black.

No matter what happens this will not end well for anybody. I suspect the shooting has very little to do with the actual unrest, which was already smoldering, just looking for a spark. The shooting is the excuse for the rioting but there is a lot more to this than we will probably ever know.

We should have learned from the Los Angeles riots (which I had the misfortune to experience firsthand). If the police had shot the first half-dozen rioters/looters, the riot would have ended promptly. It is ridiculous to see police standing by instead of stopping the dirtbags.

westcoastleo @ 8/11/2014 5:31 PM

Brown's mother, Lesley, said ""She doesn't understand why police didn't subdue her son with a club or TASER"". Well,, even if they hit him with batons or used the Taser, the community would riot and loot too because they need an excuse to go off and throw the blame off of the kid and on the police.

As I've said over and over, the coppers autta walk off the job in any city that acts like this before hearing all of the facts and seeing any evidence if it can be shown. Let them riot, loot and burn,,, do not get involved. Shop keepers everywhere should protect their shops and selves because the cops shouldnt get involved.

If I was a citizen shop keeper and ran my business and rioters tried to break my door down and loot then burn my shop, I'd be armed with a nice size pistol, AR15, and shotgun. I'd fire all the rounds at them as they entered...

The investigation will determine whether the officer followed correct protocol.
Rioting, looting, endangering other people.....Rev Al here is your chance to condemn that all too familiar neighbor destruction and felony activity that follows
these events. I left corrections because I got sick of defending the rotten criminal element that prowls the neighborhoods to only satisfy themselves. They could care less about justice especially if it interferes with their criminal behavior.
Is their some place to live that is free from these useless people.

Jingcha @ 8/11/2014 5:47 PM

Peace be with you brothers and sisters. Be safe. I'm from stl and I know the bs u deal with. I have no doubts the officer did what needed to be done given the situation and his perception. Request mutual aid and I'm enrt.

Jingcha @ 8/11/2014 5:50 PM

@ west coast Leo. I'm with u but u forget ur a wolf not a sheep. These people are too cowardice to know what to do. Baaaaaaa

Kristina @ 8/11/2014 6:22 PM

Gee, I wonder what the outcome would have been if the kid had been white? I've seen a lot of other, similar stories where the one shot by police were white, and there wasn't any rioting. So why is it, anytime a black person gets shot by a cop, it always causes rioting and/or the race card gets played?

Capt. Crunch @ 8/11/2014 7:23 PM

Riots, and looting in Missouri, and all I see are black people doing this. I have to say Missouri, sure has a lot of stupid black people. I bet no book stores in the area were damaged.

Pup @ 8/12/2014 8:28 AM

My question, is the FBI going to investigate and file charges on those so called Civil Leaders for starting a riot in St.Louis and NYC? They contact the news media who loves the leaders, as they stir the pot. They make statements to get the blacks into the streets (this happen with the CHP) to be seen and persuade the outcome. LEO don't intentally want to cause harm to anyone. If they do and go overboard, IIA will investigate. No need to riot or make your voice heard. Where are the leaders when blacks kill a white cop? ZZZZZZ!! You don't see the whites riot. Ghetto Blacks wonder why they are not liked, and wanted. Leaders go unpunished and step aside when the riots start. Maybe LEO shouldn't care and allow the killers and dope sellers/users run amok, doing what they want in their city.

Newvoice @ 8/13/2014 7:41 AM

For the longest time I have respected the comments made on this site, however this is a little much. Obviously many of you have not bee to St. Louis, and realize the what goes on in the city. Let me back up by saying I don't agree with the action from the black male, nor of the officer especially if the suspect was surrendering. However, the community should not use this as an excuse to destroy thier own community. I am a black male, leo, and from St. Louis, and the ghetto unwanted people are my people. When a black kills a white officer he get what's coming to him through court, the cilvil learder are there pleading for his life. White kids that kills a fellow officer is often down played as dissturbed and has issues. Either way the media gives the public what they want. What's new without the controversy!

Joel @ 8/14/2014 11:39 AM

newvoice, I don't believe you are a leo....

plato's playdough @ 8/15/2014 3:01 AM

In reference to NEWVOICE, ahem. If white leo were to EVER refer to white civilians as THEIR PEOPLE, what - pray tell me as I await with bated breath - what your response would be?

The only white people who race-identify, are NOT those with whom I would prefer to affiliate myself with.

The people who have your back are YOUR PEOPLE.

Thank you all for your kind attention.

plato's playdough @ 8/15/2014 3:12 AM

Oh, what did I just find on the PoliceMag website? Thank you for asking.

A woman stole a police car, and PD gave chase. Upon crashing her car, she attacked PD, and had threatened to kill police at an earlier arrest in Oct 2010

The perp has filed a civil lawsuit against the city.
