Man Fatally Shot at Walmart Waved Air Rifle

August 07, 2014  |

A man who was fatally shot by police in a Wal-Mart store in a Dayton suburb after officers say he waved a weapon at customers was carrying an air rifle, Ohio's attorney general said Thursday, reports the Associated Press.

Attorney General Mike DeWine released a brief statement after the state's crime bureau said it had taken over the investigation of the shooting at the request of Beavercreek police. Police had said John Crawford, 22, waved a rifle at customers Tuesday night and was fatally shot when he wouldn't drop the weapon. DeWine said the man had a "variable pump air rifle" made by Crosman Corp.

Officers are not mind readers and they would have no way to know if the weapon was real or a toy. The Officers followed proper police procedure but I seriously doubt DeWine can understand that since he is publicly anti-police.

A 22 year old Numbnut, waving a rifle in public deserves what he got. He could of caused someone to get a heart attack.

And what did they expect the responding Officer(s) to do? Ask the dirt bag, Sir is that a real gun or not??? They did their job & went home to their families alive that night, too. Two thumbs up for them.

@CaptCrunch.....pretty quick to judge.....were you there that day? Read the reports? What if it were you son who was doing something "stupid"? How would you feel .....and be honest with yourself.

GP Cobb @ 8/10/2014 8:21 PM

@vjc: if it was MY son, he got what he deserved for the behavior.

Capt. Crunch @ 8/10/2014 10:51 PM

@vjc, You gave me a stupid question, of course a parent would not want his/her son or daughter to get shot and expire. What if your mom or dad got a heart attack from a incident like this. There are a lot of what ifs. Be honest tell why you love this punk so much was he your son?

At the risk of being flamed, this has the hallmarks of a "SWATing" episode. Listen to the 911 recording. The 911 caller sounds very matter of fact through the entire episode. He said that he saw the decedent loading the rifle, but in fact the magazine-like feature is not removable on that air gun. The caller later partially recants that statement in the call. If the caller made that up, then what else did they make up? Was the decedent really waving the air rifle around or just carrying it until he would check out? Don't know, wasn't there. The security video should be very helpful in that regard. Be aware that there are prominent anti-gun fanatics, including radio hosts, who are encouraging their fans to call 911 with false reports similar to SWATing about open carriers brandishing and/or shooting, hoping that LE shoots the innocent open carriers. Don't know if that's the case here, but there are plenty of unanswered questions that make me wonder.

Bob @ VA brings up a very interesting issue and a timely you are walking in WalMart and some jackhole sees you have a bulge and calls you in as a person with a weapon. Uniforms show up and are a little freaked out from the lies the jackhole has been telling the dispatcher. YOU DO EXACTLY AS THE UNIFORMED OFFER SAYS AND ALL ENDS WELL. What I saw of the news report indicates that directions were not followed. Blue on off duty blue means always do what the uniform says.

BTW Bob, I bet you are a lawyer!!!!
