Detroit Chief Credits Armed Citizens for Crime Drop

July 17, 2014  |

Detroit has experienced 37 percent fewer robberies in 2014 than during the same period last year, 22 percent fewer break-ins of businesses and homes, and 30 percent fewer carjackings.

Chief James Craig attributes the drop to better police work and criminals being reluctant to prey on citizens who may be carrying guns, the Detroit News reports.

“Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon,” said Craig, who has repeatedly said he believes armed citizens deter crime. “I don’t want to take away from the good work our investigators are doing, but I think part of the drop in crime, and robberies in particular, is because criminals are thinking twice that citizens could be armed.

“I can’t say what specific percentage is caused by this, but there’s no question in my mind it has had an effect,” Craig said.

Good for you Chief. I appreciate your efforts. At least someone in rank knows what is going on. Just need to get the other Libtards to think like you do. I hope that Chicago is next in line. Hint hint McCarthy

Thank God its about time that a big city with crime problems has a Chief like Craig that realizes that armed citizens are not the only answer, but are a big part in reducing crime! Keep up the good work Chief!. Perhaps the Chief in Chicago will realize that same fact and stop whining about and blaming gun control laws and instead blame the lib thinking of both the Chief (Superintendent) and Mayor Emanuel. I left Chicago 34+ years ago and was from a long line of Cops there and even back then the street cops knew that good people who have guns are nothing but help when it comes to stopping the street thugs. The archaic gun anreven ammunition laws in Chicago ( & DC) did nothing but allow thugs to run the streets without fear of being shot by an armed citizen. I came to Phx where it was like the wild west in that everyone had guns, good and bad, but the good far out numbered the bad and the bad knew it! I investigated death for 11 yrs and many times law abiding citizens won the fight

Hey Chief Craig, call up Mayor Emanuel of Chicago and offer your services IF they will change their anti-gun laws and attitudes, then watch the shootings and killings in Chicago of good folks drop dramatically once the thugs realize that they don't have open season anymore. ZI have family and friends that are still LEOs in Chicago and all are good hard working folks who want the good guys armed as well. They work hard every day but reality is that they can not be everywhere at all times and know that citizens need to protect themselves at times (responsibly) against the horde of criminals who have run the streets far too long. Between Mayor Emanuel the PD Superintendent and the fewest number of officers EVER, the streets of Chicago are unsafe and will remain so until the PD has the man power and the citizens the right to be armed. You know, it, I know it and anyone with any sense knows that. The LIBS tried and FAILED, so let the Conservatives take a turn and we will turn the tide

I wonder what Michael Bloomberg has to say about those facts! Old Rahm Emanuel should have a long talk with this Chief maybe he could begin to see the way things are in reality.

Longarm @ 7/17/2014 11:41 PM

The Police Chief of Detroit is publicly crediting armed citizens with reducing crime? Did Hell just freeze over?

In all seriousness, good on the chief for calling a spade a spade. I wish the moronic politicians in Canada would take note and repeal some of the idiotic gun control laws we have here. One can only hope.

claywatson @ 7/19/2014 2:47 PM

Better than nothing, but TN's screwy carry laws have too many gotchas for citizens to be protected in urban areas. All states need MS's enhanced weapons permit.

Patriotic Veteran @ 7/19/2014 6:10 PM

Do you not find it funny that the strongest push for GUN CONTROL is in the MOST populated states of USA....I wonder why ? No; not to reduce any crime what so ever! ----to allow it to flourish and usher in you greatest dreams for de GESTAPO? Smart ones move away from those LIBERAL HELL HOLES long ago?
