Two suspects have been arrested in the shooting death of off-duty Vermilion Parish, La., sheriff’s deputy Allen Bares, who was killed about 4 p.m. Monday after calling in to report suspicious activity he observed while mowing grass on his day off on South Hospital Drive south of Abbeville.

Louisiana State Police Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons announced Tuesday morning the arrests of Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylon Taylor, 19, the Advocate reports.

State Police said the suspects knew Allen Bares Jr. was a police officer when they shot him Monday, reports the Advertiser. Trooper Stephen Hammons said Bares, identified himself as a police officer when he confronted two suspects who are believed to have burglarized a home on South Hospital Drive Monday shortly before the shooting.

Hammons earlier had said Vermilion deputies responding to the Bares’ call found him suffering from gunshot wounds, reports the Advocate.

Bares was transported to Abbeville General Hosptial, where he died from his injuries, Hammons said.

Bares had worked for the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office twice, mostly recently since 2006. In between, he worked for a short time for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office.

Should be on the Al Sharpton news hour as soon as tomorrow......not. Unless of course Sharpton will spin it as police brutality and the suspects were innocent children just protecting themselves. We lost a fine officer...RIP brother.

Crash @ 6/25/2014 4:23 AM

This is a tragedy, an officer so commited to serving his community that he lost his life. And yet, someone found a way to turn the attention to himself spewing racist b.s.! Your message of hate has no place here amongst professionals seeking to console themselves with the loss of a brother. I'm sure there are plenty of blogs or whatever for your bigotry!!! Go There!

Greg @ 6/25/2014 5:26 AM

No, it's not racism, it's being tired of hearing "officer down," way too often a black male to be the killer and the Jacksons/Sharptons of this world will be making excuses for the killers...due to their race. Officer Bares sound like a great guy, his daughter was in the service and he went to see if everyone was OK when the Lexis crashed in a ditch...that's when these scum shot him while knowing he was an officer, left him there and then stole his truck.

Prayers for his family.

Doesn't Louisiana have the death penalty for cop killers?

S.S. @ 6/25/2014 7:43 AM

This really pisses me off. It doesn't matter what color they are. Just look at those assholes from las vegas a couple of weeks ago. They were white. It's just these individuals that hate us cops, for their wrong doing. Let's face it we don't make them commit crimes. We catch the assholes that do. PERIOD. Now as for these two p.o.s.'s they should get the death penalty. To do something like that to Deputy Bares was cold and calculating. They knew who he was. They deserve nothing less that to go straight to hell.

S.S. @ 6/25/2014 7:45 AM

Renee shut the hell up. One person made a stupid comment about that racist bullshit. No one else did. So go throw your tantrum somewhere else.

steve @ 6/25/2014 8:27 AM

Hey, if we start making this into a racial issue we just dilute the real issue...
cops being killed left and right. It doesn't matter the race of the killer...he's a scumbag cop killer and should be dealt with as harshly as possible. Want to turn vicious on someone, turn vicious on the ACLU and sorry a** law makers who put the loopholes in the law that keep the copkillers from swinging from a gallows. Law Enforcement officer deaths are on the rise! We need to stick together. "United we stand, divided we fall"!

hospitalchief @ 6/25/2014 9:13 AM

The story doesn't tell, but was the officer armed when he approached these two individuals?

S.S. @ 6/25/2014 9:24 AM

That shouldn't matter hospitalchief. These 2 assholes knew he was a cop. All that shows is that he did the right thing in taking his weapon with him. 10 out of 10 officers would.

Ima Leprechaun @ 6/25/2014 12:12 PM

There are two bunks ready for them at Angola Prison.

TERRY F. ZECH VAPD (RET) @ 6/25/2014 1:20 PM

To hell with the bunks, these gentlemen need to be put to death for killing a brother officer. They did the deed now it's time to pay the piper. Where were the parents who brought these children up.

dred @ 6/25/2014 5:54 PM

You say " To hell with the bunks" I get what you're saying , however then yoy call them gentlemen. These stains need to be removed from the face of this earth. They are not gentlemen. These are animals with no worries, concerns or cares about anyone else. Be safe my brother's and sisters. LEO deaths are definetly up and on the rise. Just my 1 cent

Ima Leprechaun @ 6/27/2014 8:20 AM

The death penalty is too good and too quick for either of these guys. Life at Angola is the perfect punishment.
