VIDEO: California Officers Shoot, Kill Man Armed with Gardening Shears

Salinas, Calif., police fatally shot a man armed with gardening shears midday Tuesday outside a Sanborn Road bakery, Salinas Police Department Cmdr. Vince Maiorana said.

Officers responded about noon Tuesday to a home on the 700 block of Elkington Avenue when a woman reported a man had jumped her backyard fence and attempted to attack her dog with scissors, Maiorana told the Salinas Californian.

When officers encountered the man at the intersection of Sanborn Road and Del Monte Avenue, outside Delicia's Bakery, he made no attempt to hide the shears, Maiorana said.

Attempts at hailing the man in English and Spanish were unsuccessful, Maiorana said. Officers then unsuccessfully deployed a Taser as the man began waving the gardening shears in the air, he said.

"This individual pulled the gardening shears and actually attempted to attack the officers with the gardening shears," Maiorana said. "In response, the officers, fearing for their personal safety, shot this individual, and this individual is now deceased."

The incident was captured on video by a civilian and posted on YouTube.

It is clear that the young man was moving away from the officers, It is clear that the officers advanced toward the young man to box him in knowing he was holding the shears, it is clear that the officers created the moment to shoot and kill the young man.

The woman holding the cell phone video camera is screaming something in Spanish which makes watching the video very painful to the ears. She has no idea how to use a video camera and fails to capture most of the event but she took some excellent pictures of the ground and parked cars. After the shooting she began yelling profanity in English at the Police Officers. From what little she captured on video I cannot make heads or tails out of what happened but she did take some horrible pictures that showed nothing.

Maybe istead of yelling obsenities she should have yelled "drop the weapon before the police shoot you for endangering cittizens on the street" Common sense = drop the weapon and you don't get shot. Kops korner is about as smart as the lady cursing the police officers. No way were they going to let him get onto that mainstreet and stab or kill a citizen walking by! Protect the innocent citizens from nuts and drug users!

It looked like a good shooting to me I sure would not want to be stabbed by gardening shears. The woman had the mouth of a drill sergeant and was stupid for having a child with her during the incident they both could have been stabbed.

Hey Kop Korner: obviously not a police officer yourself are you. Perp is moving down a street with homes & businesses. Children probably in the area including with the stupid mouthy woman taking the video. Guy is obviously a clear and present danger to anyone he runs up to. Police have the job of having to physically deal with people like that to keep citizens safe. If the perp turned toward them brandishing the sheers after the taser had no effect on him, they have to use deadly force.
